iRiver iHP-1X0 with mSATA SSD drive mod

Which 256GB mSATA SSD drive are you referring to? Can you provide a link?

I have been toying with an idea for a 128 gig ssd from kingspec that seems to a)work and b)is a straight swop for the 20 gig hard drive.  Only thing stopping me is the whole rockbox/firmware thing.  Never get those working right :)

The 128GB Super Talent 1.8-Inch Masterdrive GF IDE ZIF SSD (model: FZM28GF18H) works with the iRiver iHP-120 and iHP-140 players using the official Rockbox bootloader. The 256GB version should also work but it is very expensive. I have two FZM28GF18H drives which sometimes freeze the player.
 
For the Active Media 64GB SabertTooth Z4 1.8'' IDE/PATA ZIF SSD drive (model: [size=small]N64G-PATAZIF-Z4)[/size], you need to use the non-official Rockbox bootloader version 7pre4. This drive works for me perfectly.
 
The mSATA SSD drives are faster and cheaper than ZIF SSD drives.

You sir have inspired me.
I threw some $$ down and got a msata ssd (256gb), 1.8 zif adapter and that zif to pata adapter on ebay.
I'll inform of my results in a week or two.
Hopefully that will fix my lock ups (like 10 seconds) on my iHP-140 on the original 40 gig hd.  Plays havok with my universal port replicator on my ultrabook when it does that.

Bear in mind that from all the reports that I have read, you will probably need to install rockbox (may need to do a little digging on this).

Would I need an adapter for that supertalent 128gig and is there any advantage over the kingspec?  That just seems to be a straight swop.

and success! rockbox reads it.  Did a battery swap to a 2200 mAh one as well.  That little battery plug is a pain in the ass to get in there.
So apparently my boot loader (version 6?) recognized the drive.  All i did for good measure was to connect the usb, format the drive as ntsb so windows would assign a drive letter, then i used guiformat to format it to fat32 (with 32k cluster sizes).  Copied my backup of the old 40 gig drive back to it and started it up.  Rockbox loaded up.
I'm fairly sure the original firmware doesn't work (confirmed, says check hdd) but with rockbox and usb working i don't mind.
I got some pics, lemme see how to get them on here.

Would you mind providing links for the type of msata (what's the gig size btw?) and the adapters necessary for the drive please?
 
 
Oh and would you have a guide handy for actually opening the iriver itself please?

I used the adapters in post #3.
The msata i used was a crucial 256 gig drive off amazon, this one: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-256GB-mSATA-Internal-CT256M4SSD3/dp/B0085J17UA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361539387&sr=8-1&keywords=msata
hmm there was a nice little pdf i saw about taking it apart but i couldn't find it last night.  Basically:
it's all t5 torq screws.
4 on top, lift top off
4 on bottom, lift bottom off
one on side (tiny, don't lose it like i did), one on the other side (both button sides have a screw in it)
Then you can pry the back off.
There are 6 sets of screws holding the front to the circuit board.  2 on the top near the harddrive ata connector, 2 under neath the harddrive in the middle and 2 near the bottom which should be accessible immediately.
And that's it, with those 6 off the main circuit board comes loose and you can take off the front plastic piece.

If you do find the pdf and wouldn't mind posting it that would be great thanks.  Failing that when you undo the iriver which way does it open up if that makes sense.  I'm afraid of snapping a cable basically!
 
Also if I could be really cheeky and ask if you could see the adapters are available on amazon uk that would be helpful thanks. Not too sure what I'm meant to be ordering :)
