iRiver iHP 120 replacement suggestions?

Don't get me wrong, the line-out is fantastic (as is probably the optical out, which I had not experience).. but the headphone-out is merely.. meh.

If you want an example from the same line, I think the Clix 1G fares much better.

I just bought a refurbed iHP-140 off ebay from a very reputable dealer with warrenty for $212 shipped. Best purchase I've made in a while. I loved my iHP-120 but this is better. Of course I only use mine for recording and listening to live audience recordings.

I bought my first H120 four years ago. Now I have H100 upgraded to H140, H120 upgraded to H160 and H140 upgraded to H160. The batteries were upgraded from 1300 mA to 2200 mA. I use them as transportable players, I connect the players via the digital-optical line-out to the Apogee Mini-DAC (living room), the ion-lithium powered HR Overture DAC (bed rig), and the AOS Piccolo DAC (sofa rig). If you want very good sound quality (transportable rig) but you don't want to use CD-players or computers as source then go for the H1X0 plus DAC. If you want very good sound quality (portable rig) then go for the iMod. If you want good sound quality (portable rig) then go for the H1X0 and an amplifier connected to the line-out (e.g. RS Hornet) but avoid high sensitive IEMs as Shure E500 due to the hiss. The Rockbox firmware works very nice with the H1X0 (plays lossless files and gapless, no freezing, excellent battery duration, parametric equalizer, etc).

When I plug in my IEMs, I use the Line Out/Optical jack. Is there a difference between using line out vs headphone-out for my IEMs? I haven't been able to notice a difference.

That an unusual way of going about it. The volume from the line-out jack should be unbearably loud, but since it's digitally controlled on the H120, I don't see why not.

iRiver seems to claim that they're no longer selling the HDD mp3 player. Come on Iriver, please bring out a HDD player. I'll suggestion the flash drive iRiver X20. It is very small and very nice to hold. Here is a review.

if you don't use optical, or even the line out, no need to have an h120; i have one myself, and my shuffle beats it in headphone sound quality handedly

How'd you upgrade the 120 to 160?

I upgraded the H120 hard drive to 60 GB (Toshiba model MK6006GAH). I moved the internal upgraded 2200 mA battery of the player to an external 1.8 inches hard drive enclosure (bought on eBay) which is attached to the back of the player, because the player has space only for the 60 GB hard drive. The AC power supply connected to the player will recharge the external battery. This mod will convert your player in a transportable unit.
