It seems that functionally they are the same when it comes to the analog signal. I must turn the volume up in order to use it as source to an amp. Is the term line out only referring to the optical signal?

In a review I saw that the line out could be used as a second headphone out.

Yes you could use the Line Out as a headphone out as well but on sensitive IEMs you may get distortion because the signal is meant for amp feed. But it still baffled me why the LineOut is still controllable vy the volume lever.

Both line out and hp out are digitally volume controlled

So setting it to full volume will equal line level?

On the circuit board the Line Out and HeadPhone Out are clearly separated. and yes when using the Line Out with an amp, I will max the volume out

I often use my line out instead of the headphone out. For whatever reason, I've noticed that I get less background noise through the line out.

Agreed to both comments.

The headphone out circuitry does have more background hiss and is my last resort. Better to use lineout through a portable amp and, failing that, use the digital volume control to reduce the output of the line out when using directly into headphones/IEMs.
