I'm thinking of a portable source setup for my IE8. As sound quality is my first

priority which one would you recommend between the iRiver ihp-i140/D10 setup

and the more portable iphone 3gs.

The iRiver+D10 will smoke the iPhone provided you feed it good files. On the other hand the iPhone to me is decent enough and with all the other things it does as well and the much more convenient size to be my choice for round and about rig. The iRiver+D10 goes in the suitcase and gets set up in the hotel room.

If sound quality is first priority, then definitely the iRiver/iBasso combo would be the choice.

But realize that it's not that portable and is a bit unwieldy to carry around. If you're looking for a new phone, an iPhone 3GS with a line-out dock to a small amp (like one of the upcoming slim amps from Headamp and Ray Samuels) could be a good alternative if portability was more of a concern.

Ive done it to mine, well I had three h120's so I had to locate and buy a h140 body.

Then I just got a ide to zif adaptor and the toshiba mk1214 gah (I think from memory) banged it in and jobs a good un.

I even had an upgraded cameron syno 2200mah battery in there with it too, but it was seriously tight but used it for a few months with no problems. Recently swapped the battery back for the stock one and it is "almost" a perfect fit, still tight but nothing like the thicker extended mah option.

check these threads out, should give you some valuable info, but it really is quite straightforward.

Where? I've seen the standard ones with PCB but they're quite bulky, I'll replace the battery at the same time and want to leave the hard drive rubber protection pads in place. From that mistic thread they're very expensive surely other sellers on ebay?

not other sellers that im aware of, I think they are only available from that one place either there own site or their ebay place, they are more expensive than the pcb adaptors.

As for the other drive and rockbox, rockbox does recognise it as thats the drive suitable for ipiod video upgrade, it is just wether it will fit and work inside the iriver and I've heard of no-one trying it or being successful with it... but like I say, I am unsure as to how definite that is.
