ok.. here is my sad story..

i bought 4G 20G ipod in last november.

and it happened w/o no reason !!

it started to make weird hard drive cracking noise

when i turned it on, and could not read the files! !

i swear, i took very good care of it.. i didn't even droped it

nor jogged w/ it. I even kept the iskin on ever since i

bought it.. and i, fortunately, got a new ipod by sending

it back to apple..

guess what, today, it started to doing same thing ! !!!

Same ****ing hard drive craking noise..

GOD DA** what is wrong with this??

i'm going to buy a new 4th generation once more...

and if this happens again,, i swear i'll abhor the apple

company for my entire life.

does any one has any idea why did this happen?

Sorry to hear that.

However, since the 4G iPod is a hard-drive-based device, it isn't uncommon for such a malfunction to occur. Every single HD-based device will eventually suffer the very same fate.

Such problems have led me to reserve my iPod for occasional use, and rely more on my portable CD players for everyday portable use.

I think you should be very satisifed that their warranty service sends you a new iPod (i wish all companies were so responsible). Looks like you just have really bad luck - maybe you should get an extended warranty?

As Eagle-Driver sais, HD DAPs have *HDs* inside, and HDs fail. They all fail. At some point. All HDs, in all HD DAPs. Nevertheless, they last long enough for most people, otherwise HD DAPs would not sell. Since the HDs in those player are all frome the same little bunch of manufacturers, you will be no safer by choosing another brand of player. You seemingly have very bad luck getting two duds in a row. Return it & just get a new one if do like the player otherwise.

I think thats going a bit far. I know I bought my player to use, not to wrap in cotton wool. If it breaks, it breaks.

Yep the cd spindle motors last a long time, I have a 10 year old panasonic which has seen heavy use in it's years. I expect it to go another 10

Of course you could go solid state and avoid HD crashes.

I had a similar problem, took it back got another one. I did treat it badly at the gym though...

I think with the way they're going with the Nano etc is great. No moving parts should make a big difference.

So you hate Toshiba not Apple; have a nice day.

Yet the warranty burden lies with Apple.

Sure you can buy a Nano instead and then perhaps deal with cracking LCD's. What then? Blame the LCD manufacturer, and not the ridiculously thin case that flexes too easily?
