I think im ready to replace my cassette with an ipod. But Im intimidated by the task of tranfering some 500+ cd's, if thats possible ,to the ipod.I would want to group my collection via genre(symphony, concerto, solo & chamber.)
How long does this take since I only have a 10 ghz computer?
Are there any places that do this for a fee?
Which Ipod do you recommend? Cost is not a factor.

It takes a long time to rip 500+ CDs.

There are quite a few companies that will help you rip your CDs. The prices vary depending on the number of CDs and what bitrate encoding you want. Some companies require you to mail your CD collection to them, some will pick it up, some will require that you provide them with a hard disk and others will sell you a hard disk.

Anyway, I don't think you will be short on choices. Here are a few that I found with a quick search on Google. Keywords: CD Ripping Service

With 500 CD's to rip, your best choice would be the new 60 Gig Photo Pod, so you can rip at a higher resolution than 128k. As to rip speed, yes, it can be a fairly slow process. I just committed myself to doing ~20 cd's per day, over the course of a month. Taking it in manageable chunks really helps.

RobertR-
sounds like you're classically inclined, and to this i say LOSSLESS!
well, maybe not, but i find that my enjoyment of classical music lessens when i get into the 128 bit rates. maybe it's a good idea to get a 40 or 60 gig ipod, however,
i have ripped alot of my classical music onto an external harddrive, linked it to my laptop, and then pull music onto my ipod when i want it.

that way i can store all my classical in good apple lossless quality and maintain all 500 cds.

the only drawback to lossless is that it eats up battery life.

edit: didn't see your excellent collection of cans in your profile!

cheers, hope i did more help than damage!
