if they make it scratch resistent, then how would those low tech accessory manufacture make money off ipods?

Also, the fact that there is only 2 colors for ipod nano gives a lot more room to profit from for those accessory makers. Not that I support and believe using cases, but I guess that's part of the reason why an ipod needs a case, and for that matter, an fm receiver, a voice recorder, a sik din line out, and so on and so on.

Bought a black 2gb nano here in the uk today. It looks so damned nice! Bought it use in the gym as i didnt know if my 20gb sony nw5 would be up to that task.

I've been doing a bit of a sound comparsion between the 2 today and although the sony sounds better imo to the nano, it is the best sound i've heard from an ipod(not heard a shuffle).

Used lame mp3 at 192kbs and shure e2's, set at 75% volume on both players.

Well I want to keep it nice, because my BB only had 2 gig units. I wanted a 4 gig but I just had to check it out. I will exchange the 2 gig for a 4 gig when BB gets them and so I want to keep the unit as nice as I can- so when someone gets an open box deal on this 2 gig'er they will get a pristine unit!

I have been listening to my nano all day , and it's so light in my pocket I really don't know it's there. Also I noticed with more listening how much more detail the nano has compared to my nw hd3 - which is the unit I have been listening to the most lately. When I play some old stuff, I can see how weak the sonys amp is, still the sony has a nice warm rich sound- but the nano is really growing on me

But it won't get sold by BB. It will be returned to Apple and sold as refurbished. This raises the prices for everyone and makes return policies get tougher and tougher over time for people who need to legitimately use them.

I dunno....I've always kind of suspected they resell some things that have been return as open boxes. Sometimes I see way too many "open box" items for any particular item....why did they need to open so many of them?

That is, VBR AAC causes skipping in sound.

I vaguely remember this being reported earlier, but maybe my memory fails me.

Just FYI to those of you using AAC with iTunes 5 or from Nero or any other source for that matter.

For that matter all of my ipods seem to sometimes have trouble with VBR MP3. Slight but audible skips. I'm guessing that it happnes when the bit rate changes

No my BB sells them open box as long as they're not defective, I picked up my mini that way

In fact I just picked up my 4 gig today and they put an open box sticker on my 2 gig.

The demand is so great that the distributor could only ration out two 4G units, hah.

Well I finally got my Nano today (after it was lost in Fedex Deep Space Nine for a week -- with next day shipping, no less!) and all I can say is -- Oh Baby!
She (mine's a girl) is beautiful! Smaller than I imagined, lighter, yet substantial in the hand. Screen quality is excellent, although at the limit of the size/readability equation in my opinion. Any smaller and you'd need a magnifying glass -- definitely out for photo viewing, I think (apart from the coolness of the album covers!)

Now, as for the question posed originally in this thread: its sound quality. I've owned the 2nd Gen, still have my 3G and 4G, just bought a 60 Gig color, already owned a 1st and 2nd Gen mini (4 g and 6 g) and of course I also have the 1 gig Shuffle. So I've had them all, and use them all. My verdict as to sound is that the Nano is better than the Mini (both gens, although the 2nd gen mini was an improvement to the 1st gen imho) and equal to the 60 Gig Color (which I think was an improvement over the prior versions). If there is a difference between them, damned if I can hear it (yet). One notable difference is that the absense of a hard drive means there are zero hard drive access sounds through the Nano headphones. This is a distinct improvement over the 60 Gig photo. Haven't yet compared it to the Shuffle.

Worth buying? Oh god yes!!!! Will I miss my Mini? Hell no! I loved it, but this one is too gorgeous for words. Worth having both a big pod and this little one? Absolutely! While 4 gig is plenty for working out etc invariably I find myself looking for the album that isn't there -- so you always want to have access to your broader collection too, depending on the circumstances.

Someone please update this thread.
I don't know which one to get, the shuffle or nano. I'm all about SQ.

Raptor

I give an ever so slight edge to the shuffle (228k AAC files, shure e4c, super fi 5 pro) in terms of sound quality in the sense that it seems just a bit "crisper"

But usability wise the Nano wins hands down. I use my shuffle because I have one. I would not buy another one.

One persons opinion
