Ipod Nano 4GB or Sony NW-HD5 ?

Incomparable imo.
4GB flash, or 20GB hdd?

Your usage should be the main deciding factor. Do you do a lot of phisycal activity while carrying your dap?
How important is size to you?
How big is your music collection? Do you want to have only certain albums with yourself on the go, or all of them (or most at least)?

It seems you just went after design, rather than featues, which can make the purchase bitter as soon as you get bored with your new toy.

First decide on the optimal storage capacity that you need, then go from there...

If this is to be your only mp3 player then the HD5 is the winner, better sound, larger capacity, still quite small (for a 20gb). Limiting yourself to these two isnt wise though, i like to be able to use my player at any PC, upload and download to any pc - Ipods and walkman are not good at that - 3rd party software for ipod, sonys as far as i know cant do that at all.
Once the WOW factor wears off (usually about a week for me) you want something that does what you need it to, i got rid of my Nano after 4 weeks but still have a HD5 for home use and a U10 for out and about.
If i was buying one player it would be the Iaudio X5.

hrmm i like the nano. fits comfortably in the pocket. and durable too, when covered properly...with plasctic wrap. i don't carry my whole album collection around with me (obviously since it doesn't have the capacity) but i know that i always have my favorites around. but i'd like to have a large hdd player for home a flash for the road some day.

Sorry, seems as if i have been a little vague. First of all im not going on design if i was then i would have bought a nano a long time ago. I want to carry most of my music library with me which is around 1500 tracks at the mo, with a potential extra 500 in the next few months.

It will be my only mp3 player minus my w800i which i have to use at the moment. To be fair ive noticed that as the nano is a flash based player, it should have more like 40 hours battery life !!! 14 really isnt up to standard on a flash, the hd5 is hard drive based and that at minimum is around 28 which is double ! lol

The reason why im torn between these 2 is becuase in england they are about the same price at the moment (£170 ~ $250). I just want to choose something i wont regret buying and ending up selling it on ebay

I would go with the one with best battery replacement and warranty service from the manufacturer, unless you buy from a store with a good warranty of it's own.

Straight out of the headphone out, there are many that say (including me) recent sony daps synergize better using the same phones. Might be do to more emphasis on bass, who knows.

Regardless I have been enjoying e2 straight out of the nano lately. At times the music actually seems to have soundstage and airyness. Very clean and enjoyable sound. I guess I consider this a synergy of my own.

Btw I don't think I'm getting anything near 14 hours on the Nano.

Setup: 3 gigs of 224kbps AAC (Just as a fun fact, the Nano has about 3.7 gigs of storage showing on iTunes when empty. I am not sure how we lose 300mb due to formatting(?) on flash memory

)

I listen about +/- 3 hours a day, have to recharge at least by day 3. 'bout 8-9 hrs with a little bit of wheel usage.

I carry my sony flash player as a backup

if portablity and dependable are important that I would go with the nano, no HD to go bad.

If space, features, and playback time are important, go with Sony.

The playback time is lower with the Nano because it is so small. Apple used the smallest battery that gave decent battery life. Otherwise the unit would be must bigger.

The one thing I really love about my iPod and was my main reason for getting it is the massive and endless amount of accessories and new gadgets made to use with/for them.

Simo_2004, you mentionned Capacity and Battery Life as the important aspects to you.

HD5 wins on both fronts, plus with the removable battery, it would suit you even more (you can pop in a new battery on the go).

My personal problem with the HD5 is the lack of folder playback, other than that it is a great lil' player.

Take a look in the FS/FT section, buying used could broaden your choice that is limited by budget.

Bear in mind the new Sony's are out this month in Uk, prob US Dec or Jan...so HD5 stock will go quite quick I think

If sound quality is important to you, go with the Sony. I just converted all my albums on my NW-ND5H (the 30gb model not sold in the US) to Atracplus 352 kbps, which was an upgrade on the new version of Sonic Stage(3.3). The sound is amazing, at lower bit-rates as well. Good luck on your decision, although it seems like a no-brainer.
