I have an old Mini 2G 4GB lying around which I never use because the battery is not working right and 4Gb is just not enough. Do you have any tips on things I can do with it do bring it back to life? Looking for my own MiniMod

You can open it up and replace the battery with a higher-capacity one, and then pull the microdrive and replace it with a high-capacity CF card, then rockbox it.

As synaesthetic says, buy yourself an 800mAh battery from ebay, about $15 all up, then a cf data card of whatever size you want, 16 gb on newegg is about $60, add rockbox et voila- nice sounding player, good flash memory, good battery life, cheap price.....happy listening

Curious: with rockbox and the aforementioned 800mAh Li-Ion battery, how much battery life can I expect using 192kbps and higher bitrates? Without the hard drive the difference in bit rate shouldn't make a difference since it doesn't need to spin the drive up to copy to the buffer.

I use V0 and mainly 320 rips, with both mods done to my daughters old 2g mini i guess i get a good 15 hours play time from a charge, very rough estimate mind, i can do a test if you need a more precise timing.

I have an old first-gen Mini laying around that I could do this with. I know the first-generation Minis have much worse battery life than the 2nd gen.

Not that it's really important, I have my Nano, but I kind of miss that old pink thing.

You need a CompactFlash card, they are organized in the same way and have the same pinout !
If you dont have atleast some practice with a soldering iron you cant dIyMod it but i think the battery replacement will work. You should find plenty of tutorials on the internet and i think on head-fi aswell

CF replacement doesn't work with Nano, there is not enough room.
