I am looking for a high quality short LOD preferably under the $50 mark. Any suggestions?

I don't know if you still need my post. Good LOD's are usually above the $50. But Fiio has a cheap and a reasonable LOD, the L9. I've the sonic cobra lod from eba y, a perfect LOD, far under the $50.

Good LOD's don't need to be above $50. If you have the DIY prowess, making a great LOD would be under $30?
 
Anyway, a Fiio LOD is probably your best bet.
