I have started similar threads on this here () and here (http://ipodstudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1785). Maybe it's just my way of venting my frustration. Apple has been mostly playing dumb on the issue (http://discussions.info.apple.com/we....4@.68b24ee8/2).

Short story: many of the current iPod models -- basically those with the auto-pause feature (playback automatically pauses when disconnecting headphones) -- will pause (while on hold) with third-party headphones used instead of stock earbuds.

maybe the included headphones are a shade bigger than some aftermarket ones. So if it's a little loose it cuts out. I've had some success with loose headphone jacks and a pin to stretch the metal that contacts the headphone jack. Pull it out a bit. But if the headphone jack is a little shorter on the aftermarket buds (so it doesn't touch the bottom of the jack) then I don't know what to do. All I know is that my friend's ipod doesn't work well (keeps pausing) when I plug it in the auxillary jack on his stereo.

Basically, the situation sucks, and has led to many iPod owners returning brand new ipods only to have the same problem with the replacement.

Apple has not adequately addressed the issue.

Enough said.

Well yes, that sucks. But if my hypothesis worked, it would save the hassle of returning it. Yeah, it's not really a solution, but at least i would have a working ipod, even if I did have to fiddle with it.

Right now, I'd probably buy a 3rd generation one second hand. I get a working ipod, and apple gets none of my money.

Seems like they could just add a setting to enable or disable auto-pause.

I've definitely noticed that my E2c jack is alot looser in the Ipod than the stock Ipod buds. Haven't (yet) had the pausing problem tho'.

BTW, I did find that the Sennheiser MX series of earbuds fit as tight as the stock Ipod buds. They're black instead of white so the whole mugging issue may be solved.

Have you encountered this fault prior to iPod Updater 2004-08-06 when the following issues were addressed:

[size=xx-small]New Updates for Click Wheel iPods

•Improved connectivity with some FireWire cards using the VIA chipset
•Improved connectivity with FireWire hubs, and with 4-pin FireWire ports
•Improved power management
•Improved performance with the optional external battery pack
Removing headphones while the hold switch is on no longer wakes iPod

I'm not sure I follow you. I have the problem with a brand new iPod, using the newest updates. From what I can tell, people started to notice this in late 2004.

Is there a fix for this in what you listed?

Have users who have encountered this issue tried restoring the Apple iPod with any update prior to iPod Updater 2004-08-06 when Apple made the following change to the AV port/ Remote & Headphone jack behavior: "Removing headphones while the hold switch is on no longer wakes iPod". This update was one of the first updates to address (and or change) wake and pause behavor for Click-Wheel Apple iPods.
