iPod Buyers beware: Auto-pause Feature is a Liability

Jul 7, 2005 at 6:44 AM Post #16 of 33
If unplugging the headphones overrides the hold switch setting - which logically it should (unplug & the player switches off regardless of whether hold is on or off), then this sounds like a physical problem with the HP socket rather than a Firmware issue??

Does anyone actually like this pause feature? It seems to cause more problems than its worth.

I find having a iskin case makes the problem even worse.

I wouldn't say i'm 100% for the autopause thing, but I don't mind it. I like that when I drop it and my headphones come unplugged, it pauses and I don't miss any of the song.

Well, I've been trying all of my headphones, and the pause problem seems only to be happening with my AKG 24P, FWIW. Those are the only ones I have with a right angled connector. I did read that others had the problem only with right angle (L shape) plugs.

!

I just picked up a 4th-gen a couple of weeks ago, and experienced the same problem, although I just thought it was me that had to get used to the thumbwheel sensitivity. Dang if it isn't a more widespread problem.

Thanks for the info, gratefulshrink. I'm...er..., grateful

just wanted to say that I'm having this problem on my 6GB mini. my GF's mini (6GB too) also autopauses. this feels really F'd up as I'm using a nice Neutrik plug. I've also noticed that autopausing is much more frequent when the pos (misspelled pod, but it works even better this way...) is on hold.

does anywone know how the autopause works? small charge just for checking the connection? looking for drops in the audio out-current? (probably not, as mine pauses without any crackling or sound droputs - it even pauses when I've turned off autopause, which feels surreal... pull the plug out: nothing; leave the plug in: autopause!)

perhaps Apple cannot disable the autopause in FW, feels like they should have fixed it by now otherwise.

here (at ilounge).

edited my post over there some...

[edit: have tried covering the bottom (closest to the plastic) in clear nail polish - helped a bit. just tried the tape mod - did not work. then tried the solution below - did not work.]

[edit 2: now tried using Shure's volume attenuator (intended for use with Shure's E(1-5) series), autopause never activates, not even when i disconnect the headphones from the Shure output, which OUGH TO mean that there is a current other than the one supplying power to the earphones that manages autopause - which corresponds w/ my finding that autopause can be triggered while sound is is still coming out of the earphones. well, of course the sound stops then, but the autopause is never preceded by static or loss of one channel...).

The one at the top is ground, the one in the middle is left audio, and the one at the bottom is right audio. The one at the bottom of the jack also acts activates a switch. So, when you take the headphone out, the switch activates and the music pauses. However, when I rotated the plug around, that switch would inadvertently trigger and the iPod would think that I took the plug out and pause the music. I exchanged the iPod, and the new one had the same problem. So, I finally bent the bottom contact/switch out slightly with a safety pin so it would make better contact with the plug. It worked. The auto-pause problem has disappeared.

this actually worked for me. thanks a lot!

I've experienced this nuisance with my 4G 40G iPod, using Senn PXC250 phones. It occurs frequently from headphone, and has been happening less frequently with Sik Din > amp > Senns. I thought it might have been related to walking with my usual fast, long stride so I tried walking very slowly and smoothly with the same result. It is definitely much more frequent from headphone out.

Right now, I'd probably buy a 3rd generation one second hand. I get a working ipod, and apple gets none of my money.

Apple always gets your money. What do you think the guy who sold you your 3G is going to do with the money? You guessed it. Buy a new iPod color.

i find the auto-pause feature to be really helpful since i can just yank out the headphone plug if i want to pause the music. btw, have you guys thought that maybe the receptacle is in spec and that maybe it's the headphone plugs that might be under spec? i've never measured the thickness of different headphone plugs but just a thought...

Yea, this sounds like a very frustrating problem... I'm gussing it's only some headphones that have the problem (as others have mentioned their jack must be a bit smaller).

I have noticed personally with my E2Cs (or my mini-mini for amp) that it is easy to pull the jack out slightly and loose one chanel so I have to firmly push it in and it's usually fine. I'm using the Iskin Evo 3 case so it's the rubber that gets in the way but I don't feel like cutting it since it's not a huge issue. I don't have the pausing problems you describe even when the jack comes out slightly though.

To be honest I think it'd be nice to be able to turn that feature off. I never use it myself because it doesn't work 100% of the time anyhow so I just hold the play button until it turns off and then pack it all up.

sorry if this is a little too late but i find this to be very important to anyone who owns an older ipod

this is specifically for the 2nd gen ipod mini which is very old, but i think there should be something similar used in other ipods

now u can use any headphones in ur ipod (that have a 3.5mm plug) without having it trigger the autopause

i tested it with 3 headphones (the ipod headphones, cheap panasonics, and an unbranded headphone) and none of them autopause when the plug is wiggled or even taken out, so now i plan to get some better headphones than the crappy ipod ones

This problem has driven me crazy too. I had one ipod that went crazy with it. Now my ipod only self pauses in my car, usually when im moving it around. pretty annoying for an extra, un needed feature
