Is the 5th Gen ipod out. I thought this was just a restructuring of the lines.

when the new 5th gen ipod comes out it will be based on the new porta player chip that is being already used in the 2nd gen mini. I haven't seen any reviews of the new mini compared to the 4th gen ipod.

Technically this isn't the new generation. They just refreshed the iPod line up like they did with the mini (adding 4+6gb's, adjusting price as well as battery life.) But its rumoured the 5th Generation iPod is due later this year. Hopefully iPod makes some better advancements. With this refreshed lineup they basically just added podcasts to the menu, added more battery life and a coloured screen. Still a great value nonetheless.

Battery life wasn't increased, was it?? I thought they stayed the same, at ~15 hours per charge.

No the battery life wasn't increase. The only way to increase the battery life is update the porta player chip. that is why the mini ipod battery life is so much longer. It has a updated chip. This isn't the 5th Gen ipod. Maybe Jul 7 there may be an announcement. Otherwise we are waiting until Oct.

I believe MacWorld Boston opens on 11 July. As we Mac fans know, MacWorld is where lotsa Apple stuff is first announced. We already know some of the stuff in the pipeline, but surprises--like a "real" 5G iPod--is always possible.

F.Y.I. The mini with the "refreshed" lineup changes is officially a second generation ipod mini.
So according to your own line of thinking that would make this a 5th generation ipod.

its not his line of thinking that justifies a 5th generation

with the mini they made actual big changes, i.e. adding a 6gb and a new proc to help with battery life making it different where as this line all they did was make the 20gb color while the 60gb remains the same.

Thats what they are... no more photo. They are all colored now... the 20 and 60gb.

So, no sound quality improvement? That just sucks. When will be all be able to buy a DAP with IPOD or better ergonomics, at least 60 gigs of space, line out, digital out and at least a go-vibe/pocket amp power/quality headphone output with no hiss. even better when they come with crossfeed adjustable via software

for 500 bucks i'd buy one. it's a little more expensive than the average but at least people will not have to buy portable amps and bulk will be lessened. quality of whole system sound will also be better because there will no longer be long cables.

Making a colour screen standard for full sized iPods can make it "5th" gen?!

Its like the iPod mini mark 2. An improvement but not a revolution
