Initial listening of "gapless" playback on iPod 5G

Okay I got gapless to work. It turns out my iPod wasn't updated. It was still version 1.1.2. To update it, I had to go to the "help" tab in itunes, then go to "check for updates." Then it found the update and gapless works.

I tested it with DSotM and I'm either getting a blip sound or a really small (but definitely noticeable) gap between songs. Is this cause of the recording itself or do I need to get a newer version of Lame?

EDIT: I just tried it on another album and it seemed to work flawlessly on this one.

i think apple gapless has problems with vbr files

DSOTM also blips on me while others are perfect. I would say it's 50/50 between albums that work and ones that have the blip/pop or super tiny delay. For me, anyway. I use lame 320 CBR.

So I tried reripping a classical album in iTunes, with a VBR AAC encode, resulting in no gaps. I then tried transcoding from WAV to AAC and again, no gaps. Also, if I upload the AACs with foo_dop instead of iTunes, the gaps come back again.

The two no-nos I appear to have hit are:

1. Use only iTunes to upload your music
2. Use only iTunes to encode your music (as far as AAC goes - allegedly, iTunes can handle the LAME gapless info just fine)

I'm doing a retranscode from FLAC to AAC right now, through iTunesEncode on foobar.

What do you mean? I only use iTunes to upload my music. I play through foobar.

By the way, has everybody been scanning their albums for gapless playback with itunes?

Tested it out on my Color Photo Ipod and it's definately not gapless

It is also gapless on a G4.

I have not tested it out, but there is a new Option in iTunes (Highlight the song(s), go to "File" in the Menu Bar and go to "Get Info"). In the dialog box click "Options" and check "Part of a gapless album".

This maybe a work around for pre-5th gen iPods?

Many people have confirmed that it is NOT gapless on pre-5G iPods.

I did not invert my letters and you are a Windows user. A "G4" is an Apple Computer. A G4 with iTunes 7 runs gabless.

I agree with you that a "4G" (4th generation iPod) does NOT run gapless).

Gapless working fine over here with LAME encoded files @ VBR 0

... BUT, I'm really pissed that I have to download and install iTunes (~35 Megs) just to update the Ipod's firmware... And it would appear that I won't be able to use 3rd part syncing progs if I want gapless to work...

I have been using Ephpod 2.75 with few problems up to this point, yeah it's a bit buggy but much less so that the new iTunes! iTunes 7 also managed to screw up my playlists and a bunch of albums have disappeared! Furthurmore, two of my 'genre' tags have disappeared (along with access to those albums via the 'Genre' menu), although the albums are accessible through other means s/a 'Album' and 'Artist' menus. Thanks Apple! As usual, great job on the software!! All that beta testing goes a long way!

Now, how about that Zune....

DSOTM works gapless for me, at least the first couple transition are. My DSOTM was the SA-CD remaster (the CD layer, of course). I ripped it using EAC and lame 3.90.3 at --alt preset standard.

iTunes lets you manually set the time for each track. In foobar, if you go to properties, you can see the time of each track also (maybe a bi-product of the lame-encoding). I found that the 2 times were different, with the iTunes one being longer, so I tried putting the foobar time in and it seemed to be gapless, at least during my casual listen.

So far I've had no problems listening to gapless on my 5G. After iTunes was done all its thinking, I plugged in my iPod and updated the software. DSOTM, The Wall, Bullet in a Bible, and Songs for the Deaf all worked great, and they're encoded with 192 VBR on iTunes.
