Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

That was my youth.

At least I still have the Rock & Roll.

I have to reject the theory that that is really a drug song. Reason: I found a red Peter Pan 78 RPM children's record of that song from the '50s.

What eliminates it Peter Pan? A character based in reality.... similar to Alice in Wonderland perhaps.
or the 50's? Surely there was no pot in the 50s.

Many of the old stories have veiled references to drugs.

Just my opinion I may be wrong.........

I was always under the impression that Puff The Magic Dragon was about a boy growing up and leaving behind his childhood. Puff was actually his favourite toy.... a kite.

That doesn't eliminate the possibility of yet another meaning however. Didn't Peter or Paul get busted for diddling children or something?

Puff the Magic Dragon was TOTALLY a drug song -- I've seen it referenced as such in a bunch of documentaries. Plus they even reference Hanalei, Kauai, which was, at the time, a place well-known for both drug production and drug use.

PP&M denied it was about drugs. It was about a boy growing up. Other meanings are up to you.

Anyone seeing drugs in these lyrics must be on drugs.

PUFF, THE MAGIC DRAGON
Lipton/Yarrow Cherry Lane Music Publishing Co., Inc. -ASCAP/WB Music Corp.-ASCAP

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when Puff roared out his name. Oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave,
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. Oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.
