a short summary:
Skipping for no obvious reason, sound bursts, "bloob" and crack-sounds, freezing firmware, various annoying firmware bugs

Apart from the firmware issues i don't say that all units have the same problems. I had two 550 and returned both. Maybe just bad luck. But according to head-fi.org and iriver.com I'm not the only one.

Well, hope it will sound better with an amp and line out...

I really hope so. The line out as well as the digital out were the main arguments for the iHP-120 in my case, but the main use would have been in the ultra-portable mode without additional gear. Good luck for you! And please report your findings!

Hm. Now that doesn't sound good...

Oh well, I guess I can wait a little longer. Still want an iPod, though. What the heck? I'm already on a mac.

You guys are making too much of this. Not to say that Jazz's thoughts and opinions aren't valid...because they really are. But what was also said and what should be taken into great consideration is that there will always be those who hear things differently than you, and to varying degrees. Hell, there are alot of people (from what I've seen in other posts/reviews) who say taht the iPod's sound is artificial and colored etc... If I had never heard the iPod, and was someone who opposed Apple just for the hell of it, I would agree, but I don't and I HAVE listened to it, and think it's a great sounding player. But I still want the IHP for various reasons. If it sounds like crap I'll return it and get something else.

Judge for yourself. I guess I could see if every single person who'se ever bought a IHP 100 or 120 said that it sounds like crap, that it probably did, but other than that, you just have to remember that some folks just have different tastes than you.

I said this before, but... Stores like Best buy and circuit city should have these EXPENSIVE players on demo for peolple to try out. Because eveyone's idea of ideal sound is different, even if they had to put chains on them I could still listen to them in the store and it would save some returns I'm sure. I myself didn't like the ipod sound, so I had to return it - not a horrible sound but I love heavy bass and it didn't have it to me , if I could have listened to it in store i wouldn't have purchased it. As far as the ihp maybe I am so used to the sound of my cw 300 and my ifp , I listened to the same file(David Arkenstone 'road to Zanzabar'-lame encoded 256') on both "ifp and ihp" and although the volume was stronger on the ihp I perferred the sound on my ifp. Go figure , like I said before the nitrus is my new baby now I dig the sound, real clean and a great eq, but I am a eq whore - maybe that's why I like the 5 band parametric instead of bass and treble adjustments.-- to be honest none of the dap's I have heard sounded "BAD" just different, so I could see alot of people digging the IHP'S and ipods and other players. One more thing, the only thing I have been disapointed in lately was the power output of the new sony(dej-1000) and panasonic cd players - they seem really weak in the headphone amp dept.
