iFi Zen Stream: Setup, Tips, Tricks...

Ok, I mentioned that because you had said in a search you can't see the Albums, I was simply referring to the Albums Tab as I have seen files that are there but not in other tabs like artist.

If I may ask where did these WAV files come from? I ask because there must be something that is causing then not to be recognized by the ZS interface. Although they may be recognized and read by other systems/programs something is preventing them from being seen here.

Haver you tried converting then to FLAC as I suggested just to see if they become visible?

Cheers!!

The wav files come from cd. If converted to flac, the folders appear after the search.

That would leave me to believe that there is something wrong with the tagging, or format of the WAV files causing them not to be recognized.

I am certainly no expert on the subject of how this could be corrected for you. When I rip a CD I'm using XLD (mac user) and rip lossless and have never had an issue. If I have studio-created tracks those are usually in WAV format from the DAW and delivered to clients so they can do what they wish with them.

If you would like to send me a PM with an email I could send you the Track from my earlier post to see if you add it to your drive and see if it shows up for you, no real tagging has been done to it, except for Artist for copyright reasons. Perhaps that might shed some light on the subject.

Hopefully, someone else can chime in here, with more knowledge than I have in this area, and help you out.

Cheers!!

@Mr BubbaHyde @iFi audio
The structure of my hdd connected to the ZS is this: a folder for each alphabetic letter, then inside a folder for each album, named "artist name - album title". Wav songs are tagged. The ZS (with latest firmware) is controlled via smartphone, I open the iFi Streamer app and do the search, but either looking for the album title or looking for the artist name, no wav album is found. On the other hand, with flac albums, I have no problem.
Anyway I'll do some further tests ...

Can you please put a single WAV file directly in your HDD please and see whether it's visible? Also, that's just my guess, but i.e. if your HDD is large and there's lots of stuff on it, your ZEN Stream may need a while to map and display everything.

@Mr BubbaHyde I rip the CDs using EAC and tag with TagScanner

Edit: After further tests .... the WAV albums do not appear, but the songs on the album appear, really strange
Just something that I remember having a small issue with files was that even though I am a MAC user I was told it was better to have the drive formatted to FAT32 to accommodate larger files such as DSD and WAV files would be.

Although I am not sure exactly what is causing your issues I am pretty sure it is somehow related to the way they are structured, and even though there are many programs that do this and many ways sometimes it must be a certain way for certain devices.

Mine go by...

Artist Folder/ Pink Floyd, then inside is

Album Folder/ The Wall, then inside that are...

All Tracks

Hope that helps!

Cheers!!

As I said before, loading a WAV album on the hdd and doing the search with iFi Streamer app, it does not appear in the results (I see the "no items" warning). Instead, the individual songs contained in the album appear further down. My hdd is the WD My Passport 2TB (formatted to NTFS).

Hello everyone, I have a few problems with the ifi zen stream.
The first is that when i plug the external SSD HDD of 480Gb, it loads several folders and stops, so I have to turn it off ten times for half a second and turn it on again until it does not load the entire disk, which is not completely full. Another problem is that after a while it shuts down by itself and then I have to repeat the disc loading procedure again. I have a Sbooster mk2 additional power supply 12-12.5, 13.2V

Again I am starting this for those who need help getting theirs working as flawlessly as myself and many others have had since day one.
Thank you, Mr BubbaHyde! I followed this last night and my new Zen Stream is working flawlessly - I like this device!
At this point, my Zen Stream is only hastily hooked up. I need to move some stuff around and hook it up more permanently. In order to do so, and in the spirit of keeping this unit working flawlessly and not exploding it or the power supply I got to go with it, I ask for further help from folks who use the SBooster MKII 15-16V power supply with the SBooster Ultra MKII 15V upgrade:

Do you have the switch on the power supply set to the middle position (16V), or to the left position (16.5V)?

Seems like a silly question, I know, but the instructions that came with the Ultra upgrade state to use the 16V DC output setting, yet at the same time state to set the switch at the left position which corresponds with the 16.5 DC output setting (see photo below). [Apologies - I’m too technically inept to attach the picture!]
My very limited understanding of how the Ultra upgrade works is that it reduces the voltage from the power supply, but I don’t know by how much.
Seems the conservative thing to do is set the SBooster to the middle position (16V) when connecting the Ultra upgrade.

Has anyone had experience with this or related questions/issues in terms of using the SBooster MKII 15-16V power supply and the SBooster Ultra MKII 15V upgrade with the iFi Zen Stream?

Or, has anyone’s Zen Stream been damaged from using the Ultra upgrade with the SBooster?

Thanks again to Mr. BubbaHyde, and thanks in advance to anyone who can shed more light on proper set up of the Zen Stream with the 15V SBooster and SBooster Ultra upgrade!

Sincerely,
Brandtacious

Hi everyone, after one year using the Zen Stream with pleasure I'm finaly facing a very annoying issue. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, so I'd welcome any help. Yesterday I received a new integrated amp, a Hegel H120 that replaced a H95. These two amps share the same streaming engine and DAC, but the H120 is now Roon Ready (not the H95). The USB input is the same. I never had issues connecting the Zen Stream to the USB input of the H95. Likewise for the connection to the Zen Dac Signature V2, the other DAC I use at the moment. In both cases I used the Zen in Roon Mode (I have a NUC running Rock as the Core) and volume settings set to Mixer Type - None. To my surprise, when I connected the Zen Stream to the USB input of the H120 the sound came out very low, both with Roon and Tidal Connect (so, I gather it's not a Roon issue). Then I changed the volume settings (mixer type) in the Zen app from None to Hardware and it went back to normal. However, if I power cycle the Zen the low volume comes back and I have to go back to Volume settings and select again the hardware option, although it shows Hardware already. This resembles my problem with the SPDIF output of the Zen to the Hegel, which seems to be "forgotten" everytime I power cycle the unit. I'm not sure I was clear here. It is annoying, especially given the fact that I want to decide if I keep the Zen Stream, now that I have another Roon Ready device. Any thoughts? Thank you.

I don't wanna get too deep in the weeds with why this is, as I don't understand it myself. The best I can say is it has something to do with USB reporting and can be corrected with communication between Hegel and iFi and following USB standards, or something like that, lol

In the meantime, much like I have to do if I use my DDC with the ZS your only option is the Hardware mixer fix.

This is easy to do, and there are so few units that present this issue that I am sure it's not on the high-priority track, sorry!

Cheers!!

Hello,

I bought a ZS for Black Friday and am having trouble setting it up. I'm following the directions exactly but my Macbook Air doesn't recognize it. I tried restarting. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Hi,
I just set mine up a couple days ago using an iPhone and the provided Ethernet cable hooked to a lan port in my router.
I bought the ZS kind of on a whim and started researching the unit after purchase. Lots of horror stories on the internet kind of triggered buyers remorse. But, I discovered this thread with Mr. BubbaHyde’s instructions (first post in this thread), used that instead of the set up guide provided by iFi, and my ZS was up and running flawlessly immediately, and is playing now.
FIRST things I did were 1. Restart router; 2. Restart iPhone; and 3. Installed the iFi Zen Stream app on my iPhone.
From there, I just followed Mr. BubbaHyde’s instructions (first post in this thread).
The iFi Zen Stream app was a little quirky (sort of kept returning to the screen where you choose between selecting the Zen Stream or Neo Stream). It took a little patience with the app and getting the network settings saved - maybe 15-20 minutes for the app portion of the setup.
After completing Mr. BubbaHyde’s instructions, I unhooked the ZS, moved it to my living room and hooked it up to my stereo through an iFi Dac, and it’s ran flawlessly - listening now.
When you say you followed the instructions, did you follow iFi’s instructions or the ones in the first post of this thread?

Thanks. I saw that but haven't tried it yet because the modem is a bit of a pain to get to. But I'll do it. Sounds like it might work.

Ya, my router was a mess to get to, too! The result of going through that hassle was easily worth it to me based on the result I’m listening to right now! Hopefully neither me or you will have to do updates/resets too often!
I was concerned that I was going to have issues with the ZS from just after i ordered it and started researching it (I know - backwards) until it was set up.
Now, though, I’m thrilled with the ZS - the sound quality I’m hearing with Tidal as well as the convenience and ease of operating Tidal via my iPhone!!! My reason for buying the ZS (and a Zen DAC Sig 2 to go with if) is that Tidal through my old Dell Studio with Windows 10 would just stop every three or four songs, meaning I had to get my lazy self off the couch every 3-4 songs, sometimes more often, to hit pause and then hit play before resuming couch time - aggravating!
The ZS has not given me any problem like the above or otherwise. Instead, I’m very much enjoying music again!
I hope you try Mr. Bubba Hyde’s instructions, as well as restarting/resetting your router and MacBook, and installing the iFi app before you begin, and that you enjoy your new ZS as much as I’m enjoying mine as soon as you do!!!
