iFi Zen Stream: Setup, Tips, Tricks...

Dec 29, 2022 at 8:53 AM Post #691 of 2,082
Just got a Stream and it turned on, then it turned off and won't start up again. Anyone had any experience with this or should I just consider it DOA? I have a ticket into ifi support...
I would check your power supply, you can use a 9v-15v safely on the Zen Stream just to see if that is the issue, while you are waiting for support.

Cheers!!

There is a solution, but it's pain to do every time, pull out the disk for 1/3 of a second from the usb port and put it back and so on ten times until it loads everything, but that's not the solution. The same thing happened with PI4 + PI2AES until the last volume upgrade and since then it loads everything in seconds.
Certainly not a solution.
My friend recently had a big bill from iFi because the USB socket on his ZS broke (just out of warranty) because....they told him....he plugged it in too hard or too many times.
Seems to be a weak point on the ZS.........

I tried now with another new HDD formatted as exFat, everything is in folder Music, everything is the same as before.
Ifi version of Volumio needs proper update like original Volumio

This is definitely frustrating, and is something you should contact iFi support about. The answer likely lies somewhere in the system logs, and I don't think a newer version of Volumio would necessarily fix it. From the Volumio support pages: "When your Volumio device does not work as expected, crashes or fails in particular conditions, the only way to understand what goes wrong is usually by looking at logs." I tried getting a copy of logs following the procedure linked to below from my the developer page on my ZS and it didn't work as described. I hope iFi can provide some more guidance on this for the ZS.

A big thank you first of all to @iFi audio support team for bringing my ZS back to life! Greatly appreciated!

Now on the topic of your HD, you and I are both using the same piece of equipment (The ZS) and although this is frustrating, I am pretty sure the problem lies somewhere in your "files" or in your "file structure" or perhaps even in the tagging. Something within your files is stopping "Volumio" and the ZS from completing your read thru and halting the process. This could be many things, but the bottom line is (See screenshots) if Mine is reading thru all of my folders and files, and yours is not, then there is something either wrong with your ZS, or there is something wrong with the files on the drive. I say this simply because I and many others have succeeded in reading their connected drives. We are all using the same update and firmware, so it cannot be a "Volumio" update issue.

We need to focus on why your drive is stopping the read, and as @skrzyp said, contacting @iFi audio support is your best next step.

While you are doing that, if possible if your read thru is stopping at the same point every time, I would remove (delete) that folder from the drive, and attempt another load-up, perhaps we can find the folder or file that is causing your grief, and work around it.

Cheers!!

As I said on the PI4 with the Pi2AES card I had the same problems until the last Volumio upgrade came, I'm pretty sure the problem is with the Volumio version used by IFI.
Yesterday i sent my second ticket.
Well, I hope they have a solution for you, at this point wishing for a "new" version of "Volumio" version probably isn't very realistic.

I wish you luck, and please update us if they find a resolution for your particular situation.

Cheers!!

Did you try using Mr.BubbaHyde’s suggested setup method on the first page of this thread? I did it exactly as written and my Stream has worked flawlessly…

Thanks @brandtacious, I can't try anything because it won't power on. @iFi audio support was going to initiate a repair, but went silent for days. If I don't hear from them soon, I'm going to return it to the vendor where I bought it and look for something else 😕 I appreciate your suggestion!
Have you checked your ticket on the support site to see if there are any updates?

When you say it won't power on are you saying you get no indication of power? Not even the far left tiny LED?

Cheers!!
