iFi Zen Stream: Setup, Tips, Tricks...
Sep 12, 2022 at 10:36 AM Post #361 of 1,569
The problem is not with ifi zen stream itself(hardware issues), but the use of Volumio OS there. It is simply to cut down costs for budget streamer.

For me it was an easy choice... zen stream is way cheaper then something like bluesound and I knew I could get around with it's quirks. It is not even hard, just few hours of your time and you are set. Volumio is open source so hopefully it will get better with future upgrades, but usually dedicated and well funded development teams has an upper hand

If the problem exists in the Volumio OS of the ZS then why has this issue only occurred since the move to Roon Ready? As previously stated before that point the ZS could output signals on both USB and Spdif, although only for Roon users. I have noticed variations of this issue since the "Ready Implementation".

Asking because I don't understand the Issue in the "Computer Realm" nor do I understand the Hardline people have on the Volumio base of the ZS.
Help, lol

Cheers!!

Also this SSH solution, do I simply go into the Enable SSH in the dev menu and paste what you have typed?

I would like to see if this solves this particular issue...

Also, we are referring to a Roon issue, I don't believe this issue is present in AIO #1 mode just Roon Ready Mode

Thanks...

I'm not familiar with roon and I can't confirm if this specific issue sits in realm of Volumio. We need to see how and if the handshake happens between roon & volumio. That's why I asked user to run "aplay -l" to see if there is connection recognized via spdif. You could surely set there USB or SPDIF priorities.

SSH is a protocol used to access shell based device over the network. You will need either putty software(if windows) or use of terminal(mac OS) to actually access zen stream via ssh once enabled. From there you can control zen stream and do way more stuff than relying on WEB UI.
It would be beneficial if you were familiar with linux commands, but as I said a bit of reading and it would be quite easy to get grasp on.

zen stream via SSH is far better reliable than WEB UI, plus you have full control and visibility of the streamer. Once connected you will be welcomed by Ifi and than you can run commands depending on what you want to achieve. I haven't rebooted zen stream since my purchase and firmware upgrade. can't even access http://ifi.local/ as service is likely hung, but I don't need it as I achieve more via ssh

I haven't properly tested how zen stream different modes operate, but it seems that it just disables other services on Volumio. As mine is set to "3.Tidal", but I'm listening via spotify now.

This Volumio is tweaked by Ifi, but either way underlying software is stripped debian/linux

Yes, and we can go quite far... all the way !
CPU isolation, change of priorities and deletion of the unnecessary... at the end = NAA exclusive (mine) - solid as a rock !!!.

Exactly look at zen stream as stripped down debian(volumio) based computer for audio. Maybe in some cases folks overload zen stream with services, local music & etc...You won't see streamers state in WEB ui. If you mess things up somehow there is a reset in place. My shot at setting up airplay 2 on zen was unsuccessful and had to revert back.

SSH connection is explained here as well and you can use this link to get more knowledge on how to operate this little device

That's quite a bit to digest for someone as simple as I,

Thank you so much for putting it here, I love to read about this stuff, even if it's beyond my computer skills/knowledge. I have only ever used the Zen for simple streaming purposes, and after owning probably 6 different streamers from Cambridge to Raspberries To JF Digital I have found it to be the most reliable and best-sounding streamers one can get at the moment. The sound of it is probably the biggest reason why I have done as much as I have for the product, for me, it's just got some kinda magic.

I have also never been one to have found any value or appreciable sound change in Upsampling/Upconverting to what I call 1.21 jiggawatts, lol I just don't hear it, I often wish for the day where someone could show me how to use HQplayer and some settings that I would here that magic , but alas I guess that's a face to face thing, and probably gear based as well.

@hakunamakaka If there is a step-by-step you can give me, PM me if you want I will certainly try to implement any commands to insert To help solve this issue for @Vitor Goncalves and will also make room for it in the first post. I am a mac user and am familiar though not well versed in the terminal. In other words, I can copy and paste commands! LMAO

I am almost certainly convinced now that I have done some playing around that this issue stems from something changing in the last two or three Roon updates, as this was not an issue till around a month or two ago, I will do some digging in the appropriate forums and contacts.

Cheers!!

I powered down my ZS last night, so it was off for approx 8 hours, left in Roon Ready Mode #2

This morning same behavior as @Vitor Goncalves the ZS is recognized as connected inside Roon but no music is heard until the configure device is opened and spdif confirmed and save clicked. Roon does show music is playing.

I will do the same test tonight in AIO Mode #1 to see if the result is the same, I think then we will know if this is a Roon Ready issue or a ZS issue...

Cheers!!

I've found the same thing when powering down my ZS. Connected via SPDIF, Roon playing but no sound, reselect SPDIF in Roon settings and voila, sound again.

I recently had a Roon update, I will check what version as soon as I possible, as there has been no updates to the ZS I'm assuming the problem lies there

Cheers!!

I'm on Roon build 1.8 build 1105. Just tried it again with power down for only a couple of minutes, same issue, Roon shows as playing but no sound even though SPDIF shows as selected. Open settings, change to USB and back to SPDIF, sound reappears. I seem to recall experiencing this before (before the Roon update). I rarely power down my ZS so it hasn't been a frequent issue.

Thanks for letting us know. I'll ask internally whether this is by design or not and as soon as I have any feedback I'll update everyone, thanks!
