iFi ZEN DAC discussion + impression

From what I've read, the 700 & 900 Pro X cans are very efficient and can be driven well by just about anything, so it's probably a good bet. Hopefully someone who has one or both of those can chime in one way or another.
Just bought the 700 pro x and should be getting them within the week. Mostly will be using it in the office and using the hd600 at home

I would like to see a new upgraded version of this with the Burr Brown chip, but with more current power for low sensitivity planars, and a X-Base button, same as on Zen Can but without the weird 3D mode that almost nobody use, I would gladly pay around 500$ for Dac/Amp like that.

I bought the original ZEN DAC as a DAC/Headphone amp for the office, only to eventually realise that listening to music in my job is virtually impossible with the constant interruptions. I brought it home a few months ago and threw it in a cupboard. I hooked it up in my home desktop headphone setup last weekend as a DAC only:

iMac/HQ Player > USB to Intona 7055-c > ZEN DAC > Violectric V281

I'm powering it with my Ferrum Hypsos, which is ridiculous when you consider the 6x price difference to the ZD and I'm really enjoying it - my other DACs are AKM or ESS implementations. Headphones are HFM Edition XS and Focal Clear OG.
It's a bummer that it will only do 128 DSD from a Mac and 768 PCM would be nice. Maybe I need to buy the Pro iDSD DAC

Quite a few people actually report that they have this utility constantly turned on

Thanks for your feedback and yes, ZEN DAC scales really well with nice power supplies, so I'm sure that it sounds great with your Hypsos PSU. As for Pro iDSD, that's a very different beast and a DAC/amp device to look into if you need a product that's extremely versatile.

I understand it can be a nice for gamers, but I will upgrade to Zen One Signature Dac as partner for my original Zen Can for now, it seems like it could be a great pairing, (except for the color match), but I don't want to loose X-Bass as it fits all headphone brands, can't live without that magic button 😄

Some users found our 3D utility also quite useful with some music, but it's understandable that it's not for everyone. As for ZEN ONE Signature, that's one nice wireless companion for your ZEN CAN, that's for sure

What'd I'd like to see is, say, the Zen One Signature with headphone amp included for an All in One. It looks like the only option (in the ZEN line) for an an All in One right now is the Zen DAC V2.

An AiO like that is an interesting idea, but our ZEN range nicely separated as is allows our customers to add extra ZENs when they like :)

Customers wouldn't have to buy the AiO I'm proposing. They just would stick with the rest of the range, and not buy the AiO. But those of us who didn't want to deal with extras and just wanted an AiO would have the option of purchasing. Everyone would be happy. :) I'd be OK with just a bluetooth/amp option and you could forego the USB input. Or you could go USB / amp with a Signature edition. But I would like the simplicity of an office option (in a Signature edition) where I don't have to stack or have extra cables. (hence the Bluetooth)

I hear you, thanks for the suggestion. Although I won't promise anything, I'll pass on your feedback internally. Perhaps one day we'll make a wireless ZEN all-in-one product that's great with cans too, who knows. We never say never :)

Hello, I have a weird issue with ZEN DAC V2 which I bought two days ago. I bought it with Meze 99 C and their silver balanced 4.4 cable. Plugged that setup in right away, everything worked, sound was amazing. Then I wanted to do some A/B cable testing so I tried stock Meze cable in 6.3 single ended socket. Also worked. Then I put back in balanced connection - suddenly only left cup was playing with weird quality. I thought that I didn't push a jack in one of three places all the way through, so I rechecked. All was good, but still only left cup was playing. I did disconnect it few more times and plugged everything back exactly the same way - suddenly both cups are playing. I was puzzled...

Anyway, today I wanted to repeat the A/B testing - so stock cable, all good - then balanced and the same problem occurs yet again, only one headphone cup works. The problem now is that I cannot force it to work on both sides again in balanced mode, no matter how many times I tried to reconnect, unplug DAC or restart PC. What's also funny is that no matter how I swap L/R cable ends, only one and the same (!) side is always playing. Single ended 6.3 port seem to have no issues.

I couldn't contact my reseller today, but I will do on Monday and probably apply for warranty replace, but maybe I'm doing something totally silly and stupid and someone here can point that out to me during the weekend. Thanks in advance. :relaxed:

It could be your balanced cable that is the cause of the problem as well, you don't have an opportunity to test with another cable?

Could be, but sadly I don't have another one. I'll try to figure something out with the reseller of the DAC and the other one from which I bought the cable (not the same).
