Now 8 weeks later, MusicDirect still stumped as to any availability.

Are you now closer to having this be a finished product/generally available?

MusicDirect is not keeping any sort of waiting list for these, they just want me to keep checking back with them, which is getting old.

Hi,

You can drop Avatar Acoustics (iFi: USA) a line.

They will keep your name on file.

Cheers.

Thank you, Avatar Acoustics was able to send me a set of the pre-production attenuators, so I'm all set.

Great news. It is pretty neat and essential for anyone with IEMs, even if they only use a SmartDevice > IEMs.

Lucky you. I bought my iDSD nano 5 month ago and still cannot properly use it with my IE80. Still stumped that for a 200 Euro product these essential accessories were not included - instead I got a common RCA cable that I already have and also do not need and have to pay for these extra... which I cannot even do since they are not available and the iFi support telling me for the last couple of month that they are coming 'soon'. Really not cool. Wish I had shelled out the money for iDSD micro instead which includes the functionality or had gone with another manufacturer altogether.

@ iFi Audio

I'm in the UK and would be interested in attenuators for my iCAN Micro.

Are you able to point me to a place in that stocks them or who could add me to their waiting list?

Thanks!

Edit: I'm also interested in trying the -24dB attenuator with my Project Ember amp so I can use an IEM like headphone with it (8 ohms / 105dB sensitivity).

I've been speaking to the amp's designer and he has suggested that in order to assess the suitablity of an attenuator for my needs there are a few things I should check (for the -24dB attenuator):

- the input R
- the output R (I saw you'd quoted Thorsten earlier and he said 1Ohm Z Out. Is this the same thing?)
- how attenuation is achieved (which resistors)

I realise the cables are an in-house design so appreciate you may not be in a position to divulge certain info, but even if you can fill in some of the blanks that would be very much appreciated :)

Hi,

Asked one of our senior tech people who said.

We do not think the attenuators are suitable for something like project ember.

They were designed to work with modern "high drive, low impedance" amplifiers and simply emulate modern iEMS's for impedance. So they offer around 16 Ohm load (precise numbers depend somewhat on the headphone) to the driving amp, just like an IEM would.

Looking at "Project Ember" it seems this has a 120 Ohm output impedance setting. This, would give some substantial attenuation, at the cost of some frequency response variations. Otherwise best talk to the designer, however we would generally not recommend our attenuators for this product.

Sorry we could not be of more assistance.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I agree that a 120 Ohm output setting would be far from ideal for my headphones. However, I think there is a bit of confusion regarding the spec of the Ember.

The Ember actually has variable output resistance with 3 options to pick from; low @ 0.1 Ohm (the one I would be using), mid @ 35 Ohm and high @ 120 Ohm. The designer, Frans, considers it to meet the criteria of a modern "high drive, low impedance" amplifier...just one that uses a tube.

I have already tried the 0.1 Ohm setting and am very happy with how it sounds, just not quite so keen on the lack of play I have on the volume pot. I've also tried the high R setting which according to Frans provides -24dB of attenuation for my headphones, and this has enabled me to verify that the attenuator will give me the volume control I need.

I mentioned to Frans that your attenuator gives approx. 16 Ohm load and he believes it should therefore be fine for use with both the Ember and my headphones, which are quite IEM-like in some ways. I'd like to try the attenuator with my iCAN anyway, so if it doesn't work out with the Ember it's not a big deal.

Can you point me to a stockist in the UK please? Also are you able to give a rough indication of the price?

Thanks again for all the help!

Hi,

I have been using the ifi ICAN nano (bought about a year ago) and the hiss is too strong for my liking when using my W4Rs and UM Miracles. (its ok for my HE-400).

I'm stay in Singapore and I have been asking around where I can find the attenuators to stop the hissing; asked Stereo (which I believe is one of your partner retails) and they have no idea as well.

Any suggestions on how I can get one of the attenuators as the ICAN nano is probably gonna collect dusts soon.

Thank you in advanced!

  @ iFi Audio.

Thanks for the competition link - entered :)

Any chance you can provide me with some info on sourcing an attenuator in the UK? As per my post above I'd like to give one a go.

Hi,

Contact Analogue Seduction or Select Audio!

Thank you!

I e-mailed Analogue Seduction explaining that you'd pointed me in their direction and that I was looking to source one of iFi's -24db attenuators. I was pointed to this adapter: http://www.analogueseduction.net/headphone-cables/yongsheng-35mm-headphone-24db-attenuating-adapter.html

I did mention that I was surprised that it was branded Yongshen rather than iFi but was informed "Yes we do believe Yong Shen manufacture these cables for IFi". Can you confirm that this is indeed the case or have I been given a bum steer (in which case I'll return for a refund)?

Thanks again.

Hi,

Dont worry - it is only the printing on the outer case. Wiring and internals is all by iFi.

We purchased a bunch of them for internal tests but then they escaped into the wild.
