iFi audio ZEN Stream - Streaming elevated to a higher plane
Jan 24, 2024 at 8:09 AM Post #5,686 of 5,899
With my ZS, it sometimes switches to coax out from USB if I switch the streamer on before the dac. I now turn on DAC (iFi ZEN One Signature, then turn on the ZS. When powering down I switch off the dac, then the ZS.
Since following the above procedure I’ve had no problems with the ZS switching output.
That's good, I rarely have this issue either, but I believe his DAC is older (First made in 2015) so it may not have the same reporting procedure that newer DACs do, causing the default Spdif to kick in.

Cheers!!

yea its an older DAC from a company that went under during the pandemic due to parts shortage. So unfortunately they wont be able to provide any support. I was just hoping that there would be a way to keep the out on a default setting rather than having it auto search. I usually leave the zen stream on at all times so the sequence of turning on things on didn't really apply.

That's too bad from what I read it was an excellent DAC (Still is I assume)

Probably the only way to avoid it is as you said leaving both on, I will pass on the request you made about default settings to those above me as well.

Thanks for letting us know!

Cheers!!

Thanks I appreciate it. Yea its a great DAC. I owned a Denafrips Venus 2 and Gustard R26 before this and I much prefer the exogal. The biggest benefit is the volume control is so good on the unit its better than or as good as my stand alone preamp.

In the end that is all that matters, what you hear and what you enjoy!

I absolutely loved my Denafrips Ares II, then after getting the NEO Stream I found myself enjoying that more on a daily basis so I did something I almost never do and sold the Denafrips, I still think about it to this day, but the NEO came very close to my enjoyment level of the Ares, so...

Onward and Upward!

Cheers!!

Thanks for the update,

I know it's a pain, but many DAC manufacturers don't adhere to all USB standards for reporting, and issues like this result.

I am going to pass this on to tech and see if there's anything that can be done.

Cheers!!
I'm reporting Burson Composer 3xp. There is the same problem.

I have a Burson Playmate 2 here in the backroom, I can't remember if it happened with that so I will check it this weekend.

Thanks for mentioning it.

There is also a problem with dsd direct playback. IFI communicates that the DAC does not allow it. Clearly a software bug.
Also, IFI detects it as Buson and not Burson.
Can you report this?

Are you seeing this on your ifi Stream app screen or ifi.local?

Also, make sure you have the volume control set to "None" and let me know if we have differences.

Cheers!!

A screenshot is attached. Incorrect detection of the driver and the message that appears after pressing SAVE.
Interestingly, when reselecting Burson, the Direct option is active, but after restarting ifi Stream everything returns to DOP. When trying to select Direct, this message appears. When reselecting Burson instead of SPDIF the direct option becomes active.
Crazy.

I see,

I do remember folks that selected all the settings including Mixer settings first then hit save only one time. Be sure to give the Zen time to completely load up 1 full minute or so before selecting any changes.

The reason for the returning settings is just because something is not quite right in the communication between the Zen and the Burson, so the Zen goes to its default settings.

I again, would report this to our support and also to Burson as well, this will help others as well that may encounter this issue.

Cheers!!

For all Zen Stream/Roon users...

It was mentioned to me earlier today that "Early Access" Roon folks have got the "Tidal Max" update, meaning no more MQA on the Zen.

Hopefully our update will be not far away for those Non-Roon users to have correct access to "Max FLAC".

Cheers!!
