iFi audio ZEN Stream - Streaming elevated to a higher plane
Jan 6, 2024 at 1:28 PM Post #5,656 of 5,935
Two qustions:

1. According to your experience, will the iFi ZS usb output to Hugo2 (or any other quality DAC), benefit from either the AudioQuest Jitterbug or the iFi usb Silencer?

2. What about the benefit provided by having the iFi ethernet (network) silencer (my ZS connected to a TP-link mesh router)?

Thanks
@zolom can't help you with second question since I have no experience with this particular ifi product and as rule I fail to see how such products would work for a products that is not fundamentally flawed. Secondly IMHO if streamer manufacturer admits their product require such add-on/tweak it means they failed badly in design phase of their product. As for first question: both Mojo (OG) and TT2 haven't show any improvements with micro iUSB3.0. Haven't tested with Mojo 2 but I do not think it would change anything.

Hello all, first post here.

I recently bought the Ifi Zen Stream and, even though I'm generally satisfied with it, I have two points to make:

  1. Toggling the WiFi on/off in the settings is broken. No matter how many times I turn the WiFi off, after the refresh it appears on again. Since I am using a wired connection I have no use for WiFi. I am using the latest firmware (v2.32.9) and a USB connection to an Ifi Zen DAC v1, in case that is relevant. On a lesser note, there should be a way to forget a WiFi network instead of just entering a wrong password.
  2. Given that the Zen Stream has the ability to connect to external USB storages shouldn't it also be able to act as a UPnP server instead of just a UPnP renderer? Imagine I don't have a NAS server, I only have a dozen GBs of FLAC music in a USB flash drive. I then plug that flash drive to the Zen Stream. Shouldn't I be able to access that FLAC library from any UPnP controller in my network?

Hello, and welcome!

I will check on the unit I have here regarding wifi toggling, I used to have mine off as well and I do remember it staying that way as I also use a wired connection mostly. I will report back on that one. Perhaps the newest firmware defaults to on after the powering cycle, others may chime in as well.

I do not know a ton about UPNP rarely get involved there but I would ask this question of our support folks by filing a ticket up top on this page for more clarity...

https://support.ifi-audio.com/

In terms of the Zen overall I would think of it more like a receiver than a sender in terms of the UPNP, other folks have way more knowledge than I in this area, I am also a Roon user so accessing files is done through that for me. Sorry, I don't have a better immediate answer for you on that.

Let us know if support can clarify for you.

Cheers!!

The current firmware version for the Zen Stream is 2.32.9

Don't forget earlier in this thread in case you did not see it, iFi has recommended not to install any "beta" versions as they may cause issues that cannot be resolved at the home level, Thanks.

What version are you currently on?

Cheers!!

Yeah, you turn it off and it goes on again. After force close and reopen iFi app.....its on again. So the toggle only says that it is doing something but without a result.
@pulsedriver

I just double checked my ZS and this is not happening for me, I even turned it off for a day and after power on the Wifi option was still toggled off.

So I am curious as to what may be happening for you, and others as well. And what may be different for me and you that is causing this?

Perhaps we can chat via PM and try to get to the bottom of this.

Let me know...

Cheers!!

P.S. After toggling the wifi off, press the save button below and give one minute for the ZS to reset itself and see if the setting sticks. As a note, I always power my ZS off with the physical power shutdown button.

@iFi audio Thank you very much!

By the way: what you mentioned above to @pulsedriver (and @emmp too) In my case I have absolutey NO chance to deactivate wifi. I deactivated it x times and whatever I do (save, waiting for reboot, completely shutting down)... wifi is always on. What can I do? Is there a way via SSH to deactivate it? Would no problem for me, but I really want to deactivate it. (firmware is the latest one 2.32.9).

I'm pretty sure you can't deactivate wifi with the current firmware. It just goes back to "ON" mode. It's a minor bug of this firmware. At first this was annoying because I've used the ZS for 2 years with ethernet and always made a case of having Wifi off. However, a recent post about the sound quality using Wifi made me try it and to my surprise I find it as good and stable as ethernet. I have a mesh unit close to the ZS. Moreover, it just switches automatically between ethernet and wifi whenever I plug ou unplug the cable (takes a few seconds to complete de switch). btw, I'm using Roon but don't think other services would change this. Just my experience.

I am at a loss because if I deactivate mine (from ifi.local) it stays deactivated, so I am wondering what it is up here.

If you both have a moment please report your instance to support, and I will again ask internally for answers.

I wonder if either of you guys have ever had to do a complete reflash of your unit, with the software provided by iFi and a Windows computer. I know I had to after testing a beta mine "bricked" so I needed to do this, perhaps this could be a difference, a clean wipe so to speak.

Here is a screenshot of mine just taken to show mine is doing the "right" thing...

Note the time in the top right, the unit has been off since yesterday.

Cheers!!

Thank you for your answer, but it makes no sense, really  Yes, it should looks like your screenshot, but if we disable wireless networking it is not saved. After reload, it's active again...
It is definitely a bug in the actual firmware.
In the meantime, I have found an interim solution: Deactivate via SSH, but it does not persist after reboot...

and yes, I defined a fixed IP address (no DHCP) in my case
