Being an audio company, I'm pretty confident that iFi spent some effort tweaking the hardware of the ZS for audio performance.

Sure! Digital inputs and outputs partake in sound reproduction and we have our own ways how to make them what they are. But in short, we wanted ZEN Stream to not sound lifeless, dull and flat. Power supply is just one aspect how to counteract that.

what is recommended for ZS - atached usb hdd or ssd? Now I have small 128gb sandisk flash drive, but it overheated so much.

Whatever moves the least is the better choice. SSDs with no moving parts at all are the better option, but HDDs last longer

you were thinking to send music to ZS from your win pc.
having a NAS is a much better solution to stream files locally, and TBH never heard any differences vs direct streaming via USB which I can hear in other different occasions.
