iFi audio xDSD- The Official Thread

@iFi audio -- I just purchased a used iFi xDSD from a fellow head-fi'er (it was new in May, 2020). I just received it today and my PC doesn't recognize it. I already had the plugin installed from when I had my iFi iDSD nano black label. I tried multiple different USB cables (connected to the USB-A port, not the USB-C port as I know that is only for charging). I've tried my wife's computer (desktop and laptop) as well as my desktop and home theater PC. Either with the control panel / drivers installed or not installed prior to connecting, it says "no devices connected" if I have the plugin already installed... and never hear a USB connecting sound or any kind of system recognition if the configuation panel isn't available. I tried removing the driver, rebooting, re-installing, etc. No joy. It works great via bluetooth, but I want to ensure it works via desktop. Any suggestions?

Also, if I have it connected via USB-C to wall power (or computer power) and it's powered down, shouldn't the main dial light up to indicate battery power? I'm not seeing any colors when "charging". So I'm concerned that there's something going on with the USB ports.
The light to show charging is a little dotin the back below the usb c input slot.

Are you using the blue usb cable that came with the xDSD? Have you tried connecting it to other devices or via an Apple usb cable to a phone? This might let you know if there are issues with the usb plug.
Have you uninstalled and then reinstalled the ifi drivers with a new download from ifi site?

TL;DR -- I got it working. Thanks!

I'm an idiot. By "LED", I thought they were referring to the main one on the front.

I can verify that is flashing white... which means it's greater than 75%. So one problem solved.

I was, yep. Tried other ones as well -- two additional different ones to be exact.

I didn't try it with my phone until now -- just my computer. Couldn't get it to work with my iPhone via that whole Apple Camera Adapter thingie until I used the blue USB cable that came with it -- even though a shorter one I had worked with my nano. So we can check that off.

And yeah, I uninstalled and re-installed the iFi drivers using the latest files straight from their site. Also tried it on multiple other computers that had never seen the device before. Never got a "USB device recognized" chime. Windows 10 should recognize the device without the drivers -- the drivers just added extended frequencies/MQA capability and the panel. But I tried my desktop with the drivers already installed -- no go. Removed the drivers. No USB chime. Installed the drivers. No chime/no device recognized.

Then tried my wife's laptop and desktop -- no USB chime. Tried my HTPC -- no USB chime. Installed the drivers. No device recognized.

Just tried it again and it worked. My guess? I didn't have the device in USB mode (white LED). When I was reading the LED needs to be a certain color, again, I'm thinking COLOR wheel.

Anyway, we're up and running! Appreciate the help!

Nice, curious if you get it working as a desktop dac/amp while connected to a power source: mine starts crackling after some time, typically 30 minutes.

I didn’t test that long, but yeah, it was connected to my desktop and power. I did notice that when I tried using it for BT afterwards, I got no sound. Then I remembered reading about somebody who had the same issue... and they had to totally forget the device in their BT menu and re-pair it. Sure enough, that fixed it.

I just got a secondhand unit.
And there is one channel not working properly.
Most likely cracked solder joint.
Has anyone here soldered the headphone jack on one of these units?
If so. I would greatly appreciate some info on the job.
Mind you I have some limited experience in soldering. Eg reflowing MoBo's and some very low level SMD work.

You may need to replace the whole socket ? I am curious as in what it had internally :)

I had my xdsd in a box for sale for about 2 months. I am getting my Odin's today and now the unit flashes a white light in the battery indicator and doesn't work. When you turn it on the front lights by the volume knob flash. What's going on with this thing?

As per manual: https://ifi-audio.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/xCAN_User_Manual.pdf

Blue or Blue/Red flashing on the front would indicate either a BT module awaiting connection or pairing. Is one of those what you're seeing on the product?

As for battery LED, it should flash only during charging.

My xDSD, purchased new in last month, has stopped working. Though it powers on and the various controls seem to function, it is not producing any sound to a set of headphone that I know to be operable. When in USB in put mode, the unit produces no sound at all, and the volume control does not light up to suggest volume range. However, in wifi mode the volume control does light up and change colors when operated. Also, when I power the unit down I do hear a snippet of music for a nanosecond or so (this does not happen in USB mode). That tells me that the amp itself is probably o.k. Prior to today the xDSD worked flawlessly and sounded great. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what I can do to fix this problem? Is there a way to reset the unit somehow?

Can you please let us know about this via opening a ticket on our support platform here: https://support.ifi-audio.com

I'm sure our staff will be able to help you out :)

@iFi audio does the xDSD have an automatic shut-off feature for charging? Have had it tethered to my desktop as of late and was wondering if it would be safe to leave the charging cable connected.

Although nothing bad should happen, it's not advised. A battery might get hot from charging and using the product at the same time.

@iFi audio is audio quality limited while charging the device while listening? I have the impression that on the AKG K7XX the sound is less vivid and dynamic when I listen to music and charge xDSD simultaneously. This happens both when charging from a good-quality powerbank and a powerful wall charger.
