iFi audio iSilencer+ and iDefender+

This has reminded me that I should also try one of the iSilencers downstream of my USB regenerator. So far, all my tests have been upstream at the server end. So many choices...:thinking:

It's an adventure! Please have fun and explore :ksc75smile:

I have a question about the iSilencer+ . Thinking of using it in my car actually. May be useless but interested.

?Is the iSilencer+ directional? I assume it is but want to be sure. Meaning does the male plug side have to go to the source of power or source of music?

The USB standard is bi-directional and therefore so is our iSilencer+ :)

iSilencer+ you do not need. It provides only a subset of the iPurifier3's features - that you already have :)
and as Chord Qutest features galvanically isolated usb input (https://chordelectronics.co.uk/product/qutest/), so you do not need the idefender+ as a ground loop eliminator
I do not know it, but as I see from the specs the Qutest has no internal battery, thus idefender+ may have one benefit - using that you can connect a high quality USB power source (like iFi's own power supplies, battery or linear usb power supply).

I got feedback from some users that iSilencers before iPurifiers contributed audibly, so I'd say it's worth a shot but not mandatory.

Also, can I please ask you folks to take a look at our site?

Recently we did some changes to make it more readble and easier to use, so your feedback is highly appreciated!

What about iDefender?
Also, please tell me what other IFI products I can buy to make a high-quality file player out of my laptop. My budget is $500-700. I already have iPurifier 3 and a good usb cable. My DAC is Chord Qutest with a five-volt power outlet. Thank you!

The Qutest has no power outlet.

It does have a power inlet and that requires 5V.

If you want to improve your Qutest, you have 3 choices:

1) Use a battery to supply 5V to the Qutest;

2) Add an M-Scaler;

3) Get a Hugo TT2 instead of Qutest.

My advice is to not waste money on further USB widgets as the Qutest has galvanic isolation already.

The designer of the Qutest, Rob Watts, has stated many times that the Qutest already has the best mains power supply and others are likely to be worse (e.g. linear) or make no difference (e.g. iPower). Only a battery can improve the performance by isolating the Qutest from the mains. All of this is in the Qutest thread and in the Rob Watts blog thread.

Sorry, I meant inlet.
By the time I bought Qutest, I already had iPurifier3. By connecting the laptop to the DAC via the iP3, I definitely heard an improvement in sound, compared to connecting without it. I've read Qutest thread and despite the fact that Bob often says that Qutest doesn't need usb gizmos, the positive effect of reclocker is obvious and clearly audible. I think it's because laptop is a lousy transport аnd generates a lot of electrical noise.

I would be happy to hear a comment from Bob and IFI on this topic. The most important question I'd like to get an answer to is whether a laptop can replace specialized transport. I love using Aidirvana, and devices like Aurender or Auralic seem to me inconvenient and unreasonably expensive.

In that case, the only thing better than iPurifier3 is micro iUSB3.0.

I've just ordered an iDefender+ and have a question. Is the data-line untouched by the iDefender+, and everything it does is limited to the 5V power-line?

iDefender+ was designed to break ground loops and provide clean external 5V, so yes, it works on a power line.

Update to my earlier impressions of the iSilencer+

Following the success of my single iSilencer+, I bought two more.
The intention was to have two on my main rig (between NUC and USB thumb drive, and between NUC and IsoRegen).
And one for my transportable system between laptop and Micro iDSD.

But while I had 3 to play with, I tried adding one between IR and M-Scaler (in addition to the existing one between NUC and IR). Bearing in mind that the whole point of the IR is to regenerate a super-clean USB signal, I was surprised to find that adding the iSilencer+ downstream of the IR gave me the biggest SQ boost of any of the locations I had tried so far. Still an incremental improvement, but very worthwhile for the relatively low cost. Whilst the improvements did include a slight reduction in glare, there was more obviously an increase in detail and focus. At no point did I notices a direct reduction in actual noise (hiss, pops, etc) because I didn't have any such noise to start with.

Having 2 in tandem (either before of after the IR) did not seem to improve upon having one either side of the IR, so I've kept them separate.

Having got used to 3 iSilencers on my main rig, the OCD part of my brain wouldn't allow me to take any of them away, so my transportable system is just going to have to do without - I won't be getting a 4th iSilencer+ because that would be too obsessive, so I aim to control myself :).

Cool - now we all know that 3 is the line between "acceptable" and "too obsessive" :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
