Out of all the currently-produced and realistically-priced AKG headphones, if you could only keep one, regardless of price, which one would it be and why?

Seeing that there are quite a few people hesitating over which AKG to buy, I thought this poll could be interesting and give some constructive results. Opinions on AKGs are varied as far as I can see on this forum: some people favour the K501 over the more expensive K701. Others even favour the K271 studio... The K601 does not seem to have that many supporters.

Prove me wrong!

P.S.: I left out the K1000 because, well, it's in another league.

I've owned the K271s, K340, K1000, and heard the K401, K501, K701 (albeit briefly). I'd pick the K340, though it's typically a love it or hate it can (I love it). If that's not an option, then the K701 - though I can see the appeal of the K501. The K401 and especially K271s did nothing for me. The K1000 is nice, but it's not my kind of sound.

I voted for the only AKG I own!

I kinda miss my K271S (traded it away). Man that headphone was a beast, just an absolute beast. Warm, thick, and syrupy...I want to bask in the glow of its mids again and melt in its arms...mmmm.....

But if I had to decide between the K271S and K701, it'd be the K701 hands down! The openness to the sound is just as melt-worthy!

You left out the best headphone AKG ever made, the K340. So I'll vote off ballet for the K340.

Sorry I just re-read your thread, and realised my error. Of current production models I guess I'd choose the K701.

Yes, we need to add the K340 - can you add it to the poll? Also need the K1000 but to balance out the choices maybe it says 'K1000 with your existing amp'.

I didn't include the K1000 in the list because it's a very special headphone and most people probably can't afford it. I think it would win the poll hands down anyway, so not much point including it.

The K340 can't be bought new, that's why it's not in the list.

As for the K501, I wasn't aware that it wasn't in production anymore. It's still widely available in shops though.

The K 81 DJ's! Why? Why not the 601's, 701's or 1000's? Because I've not heard those, I ahve heard the K 81 DJ's, and I want a real good portable headphone and the K 81 DJ's are jsut that, reall good and real portable.

Hands down, the K701. It gives the clarity and detail I like from the 501, but fills out the rest of the spectrum and has a much more involving sound to it. It also has fantastic air and soundstage as well as instrument separation so it doesn't get overwhelmed by complex music. I've now listened to 3 pairs of K340s pretty closely, and while I kind of like them I would pick the 701s over them without much hesitation. I found the 340s had some nice traits in the mids, but I don't care for the low end or, really, even the high end either. I also prefer the 701s openness. Considering that the 340s are also very difficult to drive, have issues with replacement parts sourcing, and are kind of clunky, there really isn't much left to motivate me to get them :p

I like the 501s a lot but, as I said, I think the 701s are the stronger headphone. 601s I haven't heard, but by peoples' descriptions I think I'd prefer the 701. The 701 gets about as close to ideal for me as I can get without getting a K1000, and the 701 would still get use as it does have certain advantages still.
