If you could keep 3 headphones....

Hopefully at some point my list will read more like some of the above, for example :

1) LCD 2/3

2) Fostex TH900

3) STAX SR009

:D

Once you get above the SRH1540 / D2000 / HD650 level the prices go up very fast

Disclaimer, I don't own all of these.

1) Sennheiser HD 518. Open back, for comfortable, enjoyable audio at home. Music, movies, games, even mixing.
2) Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. Closed back, flat response. Used for most audio tasks like transcribing, recording, or when someone complains about your 518's leaking.
3) VSonic GR02 Bass Edition. IEM's for fun, pleasurable listening on the go.

No headphone amps.

For me, I'd keep....(actually own them)
1. HD800 for the soundstage
2. LCD2.2 NF for the lush sound, from nice treble, great mids and well rounded bass, plus it's ortho (gotta keep at least one)
3. Philips Fidelio X1 (comes as a surprise to me, but overall fun sound signature, great bass that doesn't muddies mids)

My choice of three that I own or have owned:

#1 Stax SRS-2170 very natural, realistic and transparent, low distortion, low colouration

#2 AKG Q701 they sound great when you use a great sounding amplifier, I've tried the bass mod, but reversed the mod as I prefer the "factory" sound

#3 Audio Technica ATH-ESW9 just a nice, warm, easy to listen to all around headphone, works very well with iPhones, iPods, iPads, or the plain old headphone jack on laptop PCs, but responds well to an upgraded amp

b) Oppo PM-3 (Travel - own it)
c) Stax SR-009 (Bro owns it)

+ HUGO

nb: 30y ago owned Jecklin Float (this was great - except that it started to decompose itself...)

my picks! :)

1) PM-3 for portable usage (or substitute with the K545 if on a tight budget)
2) HE-560 (or substitute with the K7xx if on a tight budget) for neutral-oriented open home listening pair
3) LCD-X (or substitute with the HE-400 if on a tight budget) for a bass-bumping pair of open home headphones

only ~$2.5k for the first combo... or go with the $580 budget version combo with deal snipping =P ymmv

owned all of them at some point.
