I'd hate to post a new thread, but the problem is all the search results were confusing and opposing. I just bought a Cowon S9 and iM-590 and I decided to turn my attention onto my laptop. The on-board sound is truly pathetic, with poor sq and low power output. What I'm looking for is a good DAC/AMP combo. It doesn't need to be portable (like the uDac-2). It just needs to have great SQ and a good power output. The budget is anything up to $150 (including shipping, please do not recommend anything which will surpass this price when shipped, such as iBasso products and Audio-Gd).
I'm considering:
Total Bithead
FiiO E7: Which stands out the most, although I am concerned over the FOTM status it seems to have.
uDac-2: I assume it would be the best DAC of them all, but my only concern is since it's USB powered only then it might not have a very good output.
Any other suggestions are fine by me. The headphones that I'm using it with are the Ortofon O-Ones.
