Well it's a portable dac to it's own data storage. He never said it could be used as an external dac.

If you read it in the context, you can see how easily one can interpret it the other way if one doesn't first possess the knowledge that the DX100 does not work as external DAC.

New firmware coming soon...

"We are updating the firmware now. You can download it a few hours later.
Sorry about the delay.
Sincerely
iBasso Audio"

Hell yeah! Been waiting for this to rectify the random "pop" and reverse play order issues. But how will we be notified? Have to keep monitoring the website?

Your question can not be answered as it is comparing apples to oranges. The lineout is depended on the build in dac were as the sq of any digital signal out would depend solely on the quality of what ever external dac you want to use to generate the analog signal. So if you compare the lineout to the result of a $50 dac the lineout will most likely be the best but if you compare to a multi thousand dollar desktop dac then that one might concivably be better.

In the general sense, you are right if you consider the vast world of DAC's all at once...but most people will just compare to obvious options they have on hand as well as other portable equipment.  In my case, I will compare to see if the DX100 DAC is better than my DB-1 (and D12/MicroDAC for that matter).  Nothing apples to oranges about that...the DX100 DAC is better than the off board DAC's I already own...or it isn't.

The Studio V is easily filing the void in the meantime. I just need to get the ball rolling and sell some of my audio gear to make way for the new.

W3000ANV and eventually Heir 8A. Hope to be able to sell my open-back denons, FX700 and Hifiman 601 to fund the 8A.

You know your gear mate, thank you for making Head-fi interesting for us, thumps up..

By that same logic one could call an integrated amp a "preamp" because it happens to utilize one within its design. But unless that circuit is accessible as such calling it a preamp would be misleading to most people. The CLAS and Fostex can both rightly be called portable DACs, IMO, but the DX 100 does not serve that function.

You miss the point, the question was which was better, lineout or digital out and that question can not be answered. (Well I would say lineout is better as it produces sound).

If you ask what is better, lineout or digital out to DB-1 lineout then it can be answered
