Okay, you know what, ignore than. I read a thread in the IEM section and it covered it perfectly fine.
 
So I guess something with great instrument separation, dynamic (great bass, mids, and highs), and comfortable to wear.
 
Amp/DAC, just something that can drive it and make it sound awesome.

I don't have them but the AHD2000's will and basically are THE top dog headphones for this price point and basically throughtout the whole site. IT has balanced mids,highs, and lows from what i hear. but if you need superbass. these are not it. if you need audiophile bass. then the Denon AHD2000's are what you need. I am on this thread as well

they have a lot more bigger supremus's comenting..the guy..basically has and wants the same thing you want. after giving him links to the (was) $118 HFI 580's and reviews..it looks like he's choosing them bc of their price to performance ratio
 
EDIT:However, if you need more personalized answers to your questions. Despite the other thread doing a great job, ask ahead. Personalized and tailored answers allowed me to buy my HFI 580's

From the reviews of people on Head-fi...it basically is. If you have the cash and some extra get it. they are $350. some say they don't need an amp. but it's not like you should also just run it directly out of your ipod. An FiiO L9 with the E11 would be perfect. the E10 is also good, but $100 for the Wolfson DAC and it's not portable seems a bit high.
so..if you have $410 to spare. these are great they are basically top dog in terms of perfect all arounders on head fi..so i also recommend them. but i'm more price to performance.

If you're willing to go $300, you're dangerously close to the D2000 and that would be the way to go if you were even considering the HFI 580 at all.

he basically notes... that he will recommend the $350 AHD2000 over the $118 HFI 580...only after u tell him u have teh cash flow for it. which is why for the best price to performance i chose the HFI 580's.
 
but again. have $410 for the headphones and an E11 and L9 ($79 combined for E11 and L9) then go for it. 
 
Edit:It seems i'm more or less the only one on this thread. Of course i will stay here. Getting other opinions around the web is also great.

Are those two the best you would recommend for a portable/small rig? Well, not really portable since I would need a USB battery pack for that. But anyways, the digiZoid Z02 seems promising although some people get some bad ones but that can be fixed with a simple RMA. Unless these two outperform that. And I'm aware that it's only an amp but with the ability to somehow extend the frequency range or something.

Well for all arounders:
HFI 580(more bass)/ HFI 780 (less bass but more highs and mids) if you like hip hop and dub then 580. more rock then 780,
AHD2000 all arounder
sennheiser 600's All arounders . the denon's are more famous but. i don't have them nor seen much reviews so you would need to look around
ATH M50- most say obsolete compared to the 580's, especially new post 2009 batch of them
 
why would u need a usb pattery pack? the E11 is portable. and yes i've heard of the Z02. excellent amp for bassy genres from what i hear. since the Z02 is more bassy. im gonna guess you like those genres. so the HFI 580's is currently looking good. can't find a price though. ask around or start a new thread on the E11 or ZO2, i would love to see the results on which genres are better for each and overal...amp to extend frequency range?? i've not heard of that when i looked it up.
 
ZO2 is $100 except you need to pre order. reviews have been excellent. A head to head comparisson between this and the E11 ($40 cheaper)

I don't want to throw a wrench into things, but have you looked into some Sennheiser HD580s? While I haven't compared them side-by-side, many say they sound nearly identical to the HD600 (even more so when you swap the plastic grilles on the HD580 with the HD600 grilles). Best part about the headphones, they are quite a bit cheaper than the HD600s -- you can probably find a pair for ~$140, allowing a decent budget for an amplifier. I haven't watched any anime with them (yet), but they do wonderful with OSTs and the like. If you do go for them, look for the newer, updated driver --
