This has me a bit intrigued lately. I'd like to re-step some of the topography of the headphone scene here over the past couple of years (or more)....

some personal lists/summaries of FOTMs ,whether you liked them or not, would be interesting. I have purchased based on FOTM

cheers

p.s. (...have there been any FOTM which turned into megaflops, glutting the for sale section?)

I remember when the D77 eggo was the FOTM. Never heard them.

Some of the FOTM 'phones are still solidly good 'phones, if perhaps not everyone's cup of tea. the equation rp-21 is a real good closed can for the money, and i hear excellent things about the goldring dr-150.

The Ultrasone HFI-780s were the FOTM earlier this year when I joined Head-Fi. I believe they are still fairly popular because they are pretty good cans, but I could not stand the sibilance.

I would love to try a recabled version, as a few small tweaks would make these headphones great.

I've basically purchased 3 FOTM headphones, the AKG K81DJs, Equation Audio RP-21s, and now the M-Audio Q40s (but no so much FOTM since they haven't caught on just yet). I do not regret each purchase, as they have been a great upgrade for me each time.

The biggest FOTM that I succumbed to was the Crossroads Mylarone X3's. I don't regret the purchase, but I'm still worried that they'll fall apart on me at any moment. I baby the crap out of them.

Otherwise, The RP-21 was big for a while, along with the ES7's (which I love and wish I had a pair). Oh, and the HD650 has been popular pretty much the entire time I've been here.

V-moda Vibes. I didn't buy them, but they were everywhere.

Crossroads X3 -I did get a pair & I thought they were excellent in their price range.

Beyerdynamic DT990 2005 was the FOTM when I joined. Back then I was not aware of what a FOTM was, so I though that all the hype was because it was something out of this world and soon bought it. I soon discovered that when the FOTM is over, the headphone is just another headphone again.

is it true that the 600ohm version of this phone sounds quite different from the 250?....smoother highs and more bass? can the 600 version be purchased new still?

It seemed like when I joined last year, the super hot topic items were HD600 and cables, Tomahawks, SE530, Super.fi 5 Pro, ER6i and PX100.

Now it's D5000 and markl, Triple.fi 10 Pro, Pico and Sleek.

When I joined, I got impression that HeadFiers listen exclusively to K701 or Grados (RS1 vs RS2, GS-1000, SR80, MS1). Later 2005 Beyers got quite an exposure here, now Denon and Ultrasone 780 threads are prolific.

RSA Hornet, then Heed CanAmp, now Pico in Amps forum.
