That does look like a great unit. I wish the headphone out was stronger. That battery life is incredible, I guess the weak headphone out is the price of that life. Should be great for use with an amp though. The other thing I wonder about is if it offers non-compressed anti-skip.

It has both a line out and an optical out. Of course this is the Japanese version and may change when it reaches us here in North America.

Interestingly the lower priced SL-CT700 has both as well. Now I wonder how the sound

Are you sure it has a line/optical out? Most new Panasonics do not.

Panasonic's Japanese catalog page does say there's optical out and line out (shared jack) on the CT700. This isn't mentioned for the CT800 or the J900 (the square one), and I suspect those two might end up not having only the headphone jack

Kenwood's new portable CDPs allows you to pick non-compressed anti-skip. Alas, they started putting owner's manuals online recently, and according to the manual, the "line out" jack is adjustable in volume, so I don't know how useful that one would be

Sounds like it's the same type as a SlimX's line out.

If the lower priced 700 has an optical out you can be damn sure the 800 will have it as well. the j900 is a different series.

The J900 most likely has the same mechanism inside, it's only rational that they do that.

(unless they've got their own reasons... and that would fit with the entire Matsu****a group having lost 211 billion yen altogether last fiscal year

).

Sony's D-EJ2000 and EJ985 are coming out in October, the EJ885 comes out in November (all Japanese release dates). All three were on show at "sony dream world" and look very good IMO.

if you look at the pictures, you can see a white jack near the remote jack. this is the line out which is the same as on the japanese 790. on the 790, the line out has non-compressed antiskip automatically-there is no switch.
