I want something... different

Jan 24, 2008 at 10:07 AM Post #31 of 46
I think the PX100 is the most highly regarded here on these forums among all the px series you listed there. I've heard people say that the px200 is the bass muddy version of the px100. I'm not 100% sure so I'll just stop right there.

How about the KSC75? Did you consider that? Its really portable and everyone seems to rave about it!

Also, since you want something different, the ksc75 will definitely sound different from the DT770.

Oh right, so the PX100 would be better than the PX200 then. How about all the others; is the PMC series better than the PMX or PX series? I have no idea about any of these so if anyone could help here I'd be very grateful.

I was thinking of getting the KSC75s but I'm not a big fan of clip-ons. In fact, yeah, I definitely want something with a headband first. Once I have a portable set of cans with a headband, I might then look into getting some better IEMs or clip-ons for even more portability.

Thanks again, wrecked_porsche, you've been nothing but help!

Pls check that out first yeah? Don't assume it to be the absolute truth, I only mentioned it because I recall reading one or two members saying that the px200 is a muddy bass version of the px100. I can't remember which thread I saw it in.
Remember, everything in audio is subjective.

Oh, one more thing, the KSC 75 can be moded to be used with headbands.

There is another thread also where someone just removed the ksc75 clips and then attached the ksc75 to the px100 headband if I'm not mistaken. I can't find it though.

Thank you for the KSC75 headband mod information, s'very interesting! However, I don't think I'd carry that through as I imagine it'd be more difficult to find a compatible headband here in the UK.

Anybody know how the PX100s compare to the ESW9s? It's a bit of a strange comparison, I know, but I'd be interested to see if the ATs are worth the extra money.

One more thing: wrecked_porsche, if I do get the ESW9s where do you suggest I buy them from? There's AudioCubes, Bluetin or... Bluetin.

Well, I suppose you can't go wrong with either of them. Audiocubes and bluetin are quite highly regarded on this forum.

IIANM, Bluetin UK is cheaper? Why not drop them an email and ask them how much it would cost in TOTAL inclusive of shipping too?

I strongly suggest you drop all of them an email and ask the relevant stuff, costs nothing to do so, no?

Be sure to specifically ask if they deliver to your exact location and also shipping costs/methods of shipping/warranty/insurance.
That's just a few things I can think of, I think the most important being if they can deliver to your location or not. I saw a thread earlier today about someone paying for a set of cans and 3 days later after it was charged to his CC, he was told they can't ship there and then given a refund. So pls be aware.

See which one replies better and choose the best deal.

I have not personally bought from either of them, but I have emailed bluetin to ask about something, they were quick and prompt in their reply. IIRC, they are based in Singapore, close to where I live, so I guess if it was ME, I'd buy from bluetin. But that's just me.

YMMV depending on shipping costs etc..

Good luck in your purchase! Enjoy your new "toy" when u get it!
If its an AT, be sure to burn it in sufficiently.

I've emailed all of the companies. The second Bluetin replied within just a few hours. They gave me a total price of £142.07 including shipping, insurance, payment fees etc.

However, I asked what the difference between the following 2 payment options were, but they didn't answer this question:
- UK issued Debit Cards: Visa Delta, Switch, Solo. Handling fee £0.6 + 2% (A+B)
- Local Bank Deposit/Transfer to Llyods TSB. Handling fee 2% (A+B)

I'm still waiting on a reply from the other 2. After import charges and tax it may well end up being nearer to £160-70. I don't know if these 'phones are worth this much, considering I can get the ES7s for £90 and PX100 for £17.

I got my ES7 early last year for about £67 ... heh.
I should have bought a spare if I'd known the price was gonna shoot up somewhat.

I think with the ESW9, part of the expense also goes to the outer wood earcups and lambskin leather used in its headband and ear pads construction. ES7 just uses metal +plastic for the cups, rubber headband and pleather ear pads.

So, besides the slight increment in sound quality with the ESW9, you're also paying for the materials. Worth it or not is entirely up to you.

IMO, the ESW9 is definitely the better headphone, but the ES7 is the better buy for sure among the two. I just think the ES7 is more value for money. Just make sure you don't get upgraditis.

I got emails back from all the places. I'll probably be liable for customs charges on top of the £140-150 for the headphones themselves. To be honest, now I've thought about it I'd rather not spend that much on some portable 'phones which won't get that much use.

For now, I think I'll just get something like the Sennheiser PX100s and see how they fair. Then, when I have a little more cash and can justify spending it, I'll get something better. Oh, by the way, I tried a pair of HD25s mkII today and they weren't all that great at all. Plus, having an impedance of 72 ohms, they didn't go very loud with my iPod.

Anyway, so basically I'd like to know what to get out of Sennheiser's various ranges of portable headphones, since there seems to be rather a few:
- PXC150, PXC250 and PXC300
- PXM100 and PXM200
- PX100 and PX200

I tried the PX100 today at a store. Nice, for its price.
wink.gif

No isolation at all though, but that was a given "duh!" anyway because of its design.
biggrin.gif

However I'd say the money I spent for the ES7 was well worth it. Every single cent.
Now I just need to try a ESW9 if I can find it somewhere...
tongue.gif

No surprise about the HD25 at all on my part. From what I researched/read about it, they sounded quite "blah" anyway... what did YOU think about it? Lucky I went for the ES7 instead... You really should give it a try if you can, I find the ES7 to have a very engaging, lively and fun sound to it.

I thought the HD25s were pretty terrible to be honest, for the price they are anyway (£140 = $280). I probably will end up getting the ES7s, but I think I'll still get something like the PX100s first and see how they turn out.

Thanks again. Can anyone else advise me regarding all the different portable Sennheiser 'phones, I don't know which to get.

I've narrowed it down to the PXC250, PX100 and PX200. I'd have thought the PX200s would be a better option than the PX100s as the closed design is more suitable for portable use.

Which is the better headphone? I'd like to order tonight if possible.

hd-25. small, unbreakable, cant shake them off head, isolate well, dont look too expensive. their sound signature is quite "quick" but burn in and cable replacement really helps these cans. I have had my pair for some time now and for my purposes they really work (school, mixing records).

I had worn these around my neck for 8 hours at a time and it wasnt a huge discomfort. they alos werent that bad on my head either. I should mention my head/ears are larger than average. But the 25's seem like they would fit a person with a smaller head better.

Their comfort did go to hell when I got my denon d2000's, but thats a given. they still have their place, which is portable and for mixing records.

EDIT: also I dont know if price of these has gone up, but I got them for $180 from guitar center here in the u.s. (I got them to price match b&h photo/video)
