Failure is inevitable. It's simply a matter of how long. Part of that is the design of the hardware, and part of that is how you use the hardware.
We'd all like our hardware to last 50 years, but that doesn't really ever happen. The next question is how long is acceptable? 1 year? 5 years? 10 years?
Now nothing will prevent failure from abuse, but certain design practices and material choices will improve longevity. This isn't even new age technology here. I have a set of Aiwa ear buds I've had for probably over 15 years, owned it before CD players even existed. The cable, despite a lot of use and abuse is as good as new. They chose the right materials.
