Yes, I'm agree. In Europe this model is the XP-EV500 or XP-EV600 (with remote). The sound is amazing with the Senn PX series headphones.

I also recommend a recent puchase of mine, the D-14 PCDP. This thing is loud, very, very loud. It also has a great Line out on the docking station. It's definitely not portable, but it's solid performance.

And another feature which kills sound quality is the long battery life. Big-name companies like Sony and Panasonic have severely overstretched the battery life of their portable CD players - 50 hours plus on just two AA alkaline batteries. In fact, the only good-sounding portable CD players that I've experienced required at least 4 AA batteries, and had a battery life of less than 8 hours even then.

Put the cheaper prices, the often-compressed anti-skip and the ultra-long battery life all together in the same portable CD player, and the situation has gotten so rotten that I recently switched to a hard-drive-based digital audio player for portable use.

I recently bought a rather nice pcdp, Argon 1002WMA (www.argonaudio.com), that has 2x10mW output that can drive my Sennheiser eH 150 and the possibility to shut off ESP. It has line-out and battery life is supposed to be some 10-12 hrs. Price is about 100 USD.

Folks,

I've got a Sony Discman D-830K. Can I get a portable cd player with significantly better quality sound? Totally ignorant of what is out there and how they rate.

I will be using it with a Supermacro amp and DT880 headphones.

Thanks

First do check out the link below which will lead you to Duncan's review of various vintage PCDPs:

http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showt...ht=pcdp+review

If you're looking for one of the newer pcdps have anti shock and mp3 playback capability you may want to consider the the following Sony models:

D-EJ2000 - No longer in production but can be found once in a while on Ebay.
D-NE700
D-NE800
D-NE900

The models listed above have received favorable reviews here, I haven't had any experience with the D-830K so I can't comment on its sound quality.

Thanks warubozu,

Looks like my unit is like the D151, which is rated virtually the worst

so, i see a lot of people recommending the d-ej2000 as one of the few decent 'modern' players, but i'm a little confused by some of the references. according to the specs i've looked at, the ej2000 only has an optical line out, not an analog. is the headphone jack one of those dual headphone/line jobbies ? how are people using amps with this machine ?

thinking of getting one once i pick up my sensas, to be used in conjunction with an sr-71

........no, if you want a true hi-fi type of sound, just go with a mid/late 90s Sony Discman. I have three of them(one from '94/95 with "Mega Bass" another from '96 with "Digital Mega Bass", and then one from '99 with "Digital Mega Bass + ESP"), as well as a D-NF400, and they just run circles around the D-NF400 in terms of sound quality. Even my crummy pair of Sony MDR-G52L wraparounds sound amazing through the Discman players. They seem to be able to drive just about any portabel headphones with ease, as compared to the VERY WEAK DNF-400. Another thing that I absolutely LOVE about the Discman is that the Mega Bass feature doesn't just trump up the bass frequency into a huge thudding mess like modern EQ-based players, instread it thickens the entire sonic spectrum of the player. Simply put, it kicks the crap out of any EQ that I've used on newer CD Players. I always leave the Mega Bass on full blast because it makes everything sound so thick and gorgeous. Don't even consider modern Sony players, unless you just want something with tons of features. Just find a Discman over ebay or whatever and be happy. I've been searching for a replacement for my old Discman players for years, and still haven't came up with a replacement.....which brings me to my latest Discman dethroaning attempt, in the iAudio M3 that I'm ordering in a few days

I just found a Sony CD walkman G-protection AM/FM Portable CD.Player, D-FJ61 with a line out in my closet thanks for starting this thread!

Hooked it through my Total Bithead and my ER 4P's it sounds great. Much better sound than my PC. and the Total Bithead.

The amps going back but I am keeping my CD. player.

Protable CD player review.

I still use my Panasonic ct470/570 and I'm kind of happy with it paired with koss andsharp earbuds. Quite decent sound for being a portable.
Anyhow I'm going getting an hdplayer very soon.

I just snagged one of those 211's, based on Duncan's glowing review. I've been looking for one ever since I came across his review, but I never hoped to find one new and still in the box! When I asked the seller how he came upon them, he told me:

"The story I got was that these were originally purchased by a company intending to use them for employee training on CD. They ended up scrapping the idea, and storing the units for over a decade. They're all missing the in-line remote headphones, which makes me wonder if these were actually purchased for the headphones themselves? Wouldn't that be a trip?"

If true, that's completely crazy! In any case, I can't wait to get it and compare it to the D-25 I recently bought from another Head-Fi-er. If anyone wants, I can posts any differences I find, once I have the 211. I'm new at this, though, and only have a pair of A900s (

) as my best cans (without an amp), so I may not be very helpful.
