Some, but not all.

The sad truth is, no recent PCDP even comes close to true Hi-Fi performance. At least not from their headphone outs with no amp.

I don't agree that the compression is as bad as implied, particularly as modern pcdps measure reasonably well with RMAA etc and have good frequency response. if compression is utilised in the anti-skip circuit (most do!) then the output is probably at least 350 Kbps.

I'm pretty impressed with the sound and operation of the Sony D-NE10.

As I understand it the G-Protection setting #1 does not compress (#2 does).

Battery life seems decent. The parametric eq works well, no hiss from the headphone out. Paired up with Sennheiser PX-100, bass has some weight, treble is clear, even has decent volume -- it adds up, to me, one of the best PCDP I've heard in years. The MP3/ATRAC3 capability is an added bonus.

I would expect similar performance from the D-NE900.

I've got a Sony D-EJ2000 that sounds decent on Alessandros from its headphone out, particularly in comparison to my older Panasonic SL-S160, which has no anti-skip circuitry and puts out a lot of volume using 2 AA batteries (8 hour playing life).

I recall somebody around here was quite happy with their recent D-NE900 purchase; they will probably pipe up presently. It really depends on what other players you've listened to as reference, what environment you are listening in, what headphones you've got, and what your music preferences are. That's a lot of variables...

on the other hand, what's the highest out put frequency of the older but classic PCDPs?

It has a line out which is ok, but the headphone output is awful, sounded quite muddy and just flat out boring (it's anything but neutral).

I personally use a Sony D-11 that i bought used on ebay for a couple of bucks and it sounds great. Uses 4 AA batteries so buy rechargeables but be prepared for its weight, its rather heavy/bulky (if anyone tries to mug you for it just smash it over their head).

Why not go with a mp3 player? Don't have a pc? Just wondering. I personally consider the use of a discman as a waste since so many HD based music players blow them away in terms of sound quality, size and options.

Not sure what you mean here, but you also have to consider many of these classic pcdp's have a sonic signature, some are balanced, some are dark, some bright, but i can tell you they go "hella loud." In fact, i own a Sony 25S (which many other head-fiers do also) and when i plugged in several of my headphones i had no need to go passed 2 on the volume dial. Mind you, the sucker was very bright and lacked low end punch. The D-11 seems pretty darn good (with the mega bass off, since it's very overpowering when turned on) and it has some sort of soundstage compared to a D-33 i own. Funny thing is that i own a Sony Minidisc player, E33, which sounds wonderful without the mega bass turned on, kinda warm, punchy bass and smooth highs (a little rolled off), but it's easy on the ears and it powers any efficient headphones without issue.

As a note, the D-11 and D-12 are the same circuit-wise afaik, since I had both...and they both looked the same, but the 11 wouldn't play

The externals just look different.

Okay, the D-12 sounds above and beyond any other portable unit I own, if it had pitch-control, it would be amazing, but it doesn't...also the "8 hours" of battery life on 4 AA kinda limits its appeal, but it works well. Not only is it louder than, it sounds better than the: D-202, D-242, D-E707 (it actaully skips less than this one, weird, huh), D-E880, D-EJ915, D-EJ2000.

The 2000 is good, but I find it kinda boring...I dunno, the D-12 sparkles compared to it. (really, the highs are a lot better).

I agree with gloco on how kickass md units are.

They don't compress, so they are much better. But my point is the compression on pcdps is better than most people's mp3 collections (not here obviously!) so it is a matter of perspective. For example, I can't hear the difference between the headphone out (compressed) and line out (uncompressed) of my pcdp through the same amp.

and what's the newest sony PCDPs(for example NE20 EJ2000)' sound like compared with the HI-MD NH1?

Still a good pcdp using the headphone out (remote), but sounds so much better with an amp. I think the Sony D-EJ 915 and 985 also have good sound through the headphone out.

Of course, I would suggest replacing the stock earphones with something else.
