I tunes- what is peoples beef with it?

?? you can add manual album art on Itunes perfectly

I think Itunes is the best software for syncing with a portable device - I don't know what peoples problems with it are.

I think some people just don't like it as its Apple - which is just crazy.

I sync about 40 podcasts, as well as many GB of music, and its fine. What other software allows you to auto update all your podcasts, apps etc, then just do one simple sync ?

I'm actually more concerned that you need an account at all. I'd add the AA manually, but of course the app doesn't allow that.

To each his own. I prefer absolute control over my collection and I find it to be much easier, once I set it up the way I want it. Probably the biggest advantage is that it's portable - I can use it on my Ubuntu system, my Windows system, MacOS system, my netbook, Rockboxed Gigabeat or Sansa Clip.

As for the piracy comment, that's completely off-base. Again, in my case, I own the music device and prefer that the file structure be setup in such a way that it's as portable as possible.

I haven't found the perfect music player yet, and I probably never will. It's just a question of using the best one you can find, for your needs.

The OP wanted the opinion of why some of us chose to use a player other than iTunes. It was a pretty simple question, until things got a bit heated.

Most of the Apple supporters here are not "iSheep" - they've made a conscious decision to use iTunes as their player of choice. And, if it works for them, then that's great. However, just because someone does not like iTunes doesn't mean that they only hate it because they are fighting against "the man". I think that those of us who use alternative players / drag and drop have also made a well thought out decision as to the reasons why, and some of us have stated those reasons here. I think we should get the same respect as those of you who use iTunes.

If you don't like it, then don't use it, but a lot of these arguments have been around forever (Mac vs. Windows). If you need more flexibility of codecs and file transfers etc, don't use it, but it does not make people who use it some shills for a big Corporation. I agree with vennen min krmathis regarding itunes. Also, I almost never get album artwork through itunes, I copy and paste the cover art directly through Opera. Haven't bought from iutnes in years, everything i have is lossless.

Arguing that iTunes is not a monolithic, proprietary, and unsynergistic program is like asserting that Pol Pot brought democracy to Cambodia.

For me, every day of iTunes is a holiday in Cambodia.

i hate that it insists on keeping the library file where it wants to, i hate its installing ****ing quicktime, i hate its insisting of running 400 hundred processes, i hate its as slow as buggery doing anything, i hate that simply scrolling through the list of tracks quickly maxes the cpu i hate that it cant play hd podcasts white any other non apple plays them effortlessly. i hate that downloading a couple podcast sends cpu usage to 50% like how the hell does it manage that

and no its not a crap old cpu, 2.2ghz core duo. no way should it use the cpu it does or be so ungodly slow

mostly i hate its rampant and abusive cpu usage whenever it does anything

Would you mind explaining how you do that, please? (and without an iTunes account, btw). Most of the other programs I've used (foobar / Songbird / Amarok / JaJuk) picks up the AA in my folder automatically (usually called "cover.jpg"). But I have never seen a way to do this in iTunes without having to create an account with Apple, which I refuse to do. The reason why, btw, is because I have no need to use their store and I don't see that having an account with them should be a requirement to use their music player.

I gave up on itunes years ago. It was sluggish on my pc (100 gigs of music) and the worst memory hog if various programs that I tried. It forced me to install quicktime, and installed an auto-updater as well. I hated it's all or nothing approach to library management, though to say it's capable of library management is laughable to begin with.

Just select the album you want, then 'get info', go to options and drag artwork to the artwork pane. Or you could have the artwork pane open and slide artwork onto selected files. Voila! artwork!

I had tried that before, but it never worked for me. Granted, I use OGG Vorbis primarily so maybe it's a codec compatibility issue. Thanks for the reply, however.

I haven't tried adding album artwork to OGG vorbis or FLAC in iTunes; those formats I use sometimes, but mainly for transcoding purposes, so my answer will only work for the supported industry standard files and Apple's proprietary ALAC.

Only downside I can see is that I have recorded everything Apple lossless so I will have to re record if I change to a non Apple player.

Other players like foobar play ALAC with the proper plugin.

I like how iTunes organizes my music files. Then I use foobar to add and play them.
