Well, I've owned a lot of headphones, but now it seems that the AKG's are the best that I'll ever pay for a set of cans (no, r10's, hp1's, etc..) Everyone says they are the best, and superior to HD650's. I'm thinking about packing up the HD650's and Zu Mobius and picking up a pair. What will I be gaining with these? How is the bass? I remember someone saying that they won't sound that good out of a PPA, so I will probably have to upgrade that and go with Tubes as well

. Help me out and tell me what I'm missing with the HD650's that the K1000's will give me.

1. Larger soundstage and better imaging. (probably, I'm guessing so, since the 650's are not a radical design change from the 600's)

2. More Dynamic Frequency Response. Piercing highs, and aggressive mid bass. While Sennheiser's are considered to be more "laid back", the K1000 with the right amp. 650's will still own the K1000's in the lowest octaves of bass extension.

3. A thinner wallet with all the new toys you'll have to buy with the K1000.

They are not the best - they are different. Afterall, you may have to get a subwoofer for them.

Excitement. Different sense of dynamics. Openness. Airyness. Spaciousness.

Don't rush to exchange the 650's for a K1000. I have both, and I'm still trying to decide which one is best for what kinds of music. So far I feel that the K1000 is best for most kinds, with the possible exception of full orchestral classical music. I'm also listening to an RS-1, and it'll be quite a while before I decide which headphone is best for what type of music.

That's unfortunate that you are selling everything. Hope things look better for you.

As for K1000 and HD650, it's ultimately a matter of personal choice. I don't think K1000s work in a "lesser" system though. The lack of detail would make the soundstage a bit fake in my opinion and make a hole in the middle. The top end harshness may make things too unbearable.
