I think Foobar is going obsolete

I actually don't see why I would want to drop Foobar for anything. There's nothing obvious to improve... EXCEPT can they create a module that allows you to keep playing from one playlist (such as an album in Library view) while looking at something else (such as, for example, another album in Library view?) Foobar bounces around just a little too easily. I use the Queue Manager to deal with that but it really is a silly shortcoming to an otherwsie excellent program.

Don't get me wrong though, I AM a Foobar fanboy.

Again people are missing the issue. I love Foobar but show me a parametric EQ, rever, or G-force plugins. The reason winamp is the future is it turns your computer into a studio. ElectricQ is brilliant, I would love to have something like this on Foobar. I guess if you don't listen to raw soundboards these features are less important, but I need to master these raw SBD's and Aud recordings on the fly as I listen to them.

That is rather specialised. Kicking back and listening to Blind Melon doesn't require any of those things. A couple db boost below 110 hz, a mild crossfeed, reliable replaygain and a good lyrics panel do it for me.

Not many programs do the keeping of large databases very well.
Foobar is flaky at best at this.

I'm not as negative on that as some. It does take a while to scan afresh but as taught by someone on here, you can drag new files into your playlist, click refresh tree and your library is updated. Then rescan maybe once every week or two to be completely safe. The database is certainly easy to navigate IMHO.

Now let me compliment you on your fine avatar! That would be circa the Lamb tour, I believe.

Regal, one thing I absolutely hate is having to readjust everything for each album or each song. That makes listening to music like work... and its supposed to be the opposite.

As for database management,
I don't really know how to explain this. The way you tag and store your music effects how anything will pick it up. Therefore, I archive stuff carefully. I have to say MediaMonkey does a pretty good job of being "automatic"... but I believe that manual archival first, is the key for a good database. Relying on software to organize can leave you up a creek, should you decide to switch software at some point.

I can take one of my dedicated music hard drives, pop it into a external USB chassis, and go over to a friend's house. I can plug it in and DJ right off the drive... because its organized. I'm not chained to software, I don't want to be.

i'm pretty anal about my tags but with foobar, i just use the explorer tree so i don't have to wait for scanning of the database. i just keep my music stored in a genre > artist > album tree structure and i'm good to go. it's one of the reasons i love foobar.

I've just recently started using Foobar, and I can really tell the difference in quality over Winamp. My Winamp might not be set up just right, but I'm using most of the default settings in Foobar and there is a noticible improvement with my cheap little AC97 and SR-125's. Just got to get KS working...
For whatever reason, MP3's sound amazing in Linux. I just use XMMS, nothing special, but the sound comes through so much clearer. I might just be imagining things (Power of the Penguin) but I'll see...

Going to be getting a Bluegears soundcard and am building my CMoy amp. When those are done, I can make a more able comparison.

Winamps DSP's are a whole lot less work than the alternative with foobar (using Goldwave or Cool edit Pro.) I understand that most people only listen to commercial releases, but for those of us who listen to non-mastered material Winamp is a Godsend.

I don't know if winamp is the ultimate tool for that purpose, as I don't know anything about apps for mastering. I'd agree that Foobar wouldn't seem to suit ya.

Whats cool is you've illustrated where a particular program excels for your needs. Thats what it all boils down to... what you want or need, and whatever does exactly that task the best.
