Going from the hd558 to the dt880 would it be a big improvement ?

That should be a big improvement if the rest of your system is up to the task (DAC/source material, amplification).  The Sennheiser HD 600 might be a more direct upgrade.

If you don't have proper setup, go with a lower impedance headphone like Shure 1440 or 598. They are pretty accurate. DT880 is also an excellent choice.

if for personal enjoyment, your headphone choice will depend on your taste in music & preferred sound signature. if for professional use, you will be looking for the most neutral pair of headphones in your price range.
