Not really, the 955 stacks up pretty damn well against intel's offering (Core i7 920) and as for price performance, I've been wondering why the 9950 BE is so much less than Intel's comparable Q6600. AMD does, at this point, have sweet spots in the price/performance ratio that beat out Intel, not only because of the processors, but because of the motherboards as well. My current overclocked 9950BE beats out stock 920s in 3dmark/pcmark scores: thats quite something, IMHO. Maybe I'm just lucky, but my friend who built a higher-end Core i7 system even respects my mid-range AMD creation: It's a screamer if done properly, and certainly beats the pants off the price.

I guess we are just violently agreeing here.

Also, you say max 1333? Bull****. The motherboard would be the issue there, and if the motherboard doesn't support 1600, it will just underclock it to 1333.

It's not the motherboard for sure. I'm 100% sure that supports 1600 just fine. I don't know any more why I did it really. Then again, why there is 1333 in my computer? I guess I'll try 1600 tomorrow. Odd really because I bought 1333 specifically for this system. Oh well... Just ignore my BS about the memory then guyx1992.

Edit: Just looked it up and obviously the AMD supports 1600. WHY O WHY Do I have 1333 memory in my computer? Must have had too many beers when I bought it.

I'm afraid the AMD 955 is a big stretch. For that money I'd rather go with an i7 based system.
The computer has to be good for 2 years because then I won't have too much free time so all my computer time will be in the web and not gaming.
So I don't want to add hundreds of dollars so I'll have an option to upgrade my PC in a few years. I'd rather hold on to this one for 3-4 years and then just buy a new one.

Get the Intel E5300 and any decent 775 mobo and oc the hell out of the it, you can easily get 3.2GHZ or more by just changing the FSB, very very simple.

Pair that CPU up with a 150USD video card and you are all set.

I think he wanted something better than that.

Anyway, I would think maybe then getting the Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition, three cores (with possibly unlocking another, see google) and an unlocked multiplier at a good price.

At that res, a 4890 is a bit overkill, 4870 would be alright. If you really need perfect Crysis benchmarks, go for the 4890 if you really want. I would say get a 4870 and a Black Edition processor though, so you get the unlocked multiplier.

Agreed 100%. My overclocked 4850 is perfectly adequate for 1920x1200, 4890 @ 1680x1050 is definitely overkill.

Are you sure it's an overkill? If it is then I'll go with the 4850 or 4870.
Currently I'm seriously thinking about this combo:
Q9550 + p43-ds3 + 4gb ddr2 + 4890 1gb / 4870 512mb
Looks good?

You may be able to swing a Core i7 920 and 6GB on your budget, but only if you plan on using your computer for graphics/editing in addition to gaming (and have a 64-bit OS).

no. an i7 is over my budget and I have no use of it.
Now I want a computer that will be good with the current games and the ones to come in the next year or two. After that I'll be able to play once a week even less. I'll just buy my next computer in 4 years I think.

My budget rig is about 650 dollars

640GB Digital Western Caviar black 32mb cache
4GB Patriot 1066 DDR2 Ram
Phenom II X4 920
Asrock A790MH/128
Antec 300 bundled with PSU
ATI Radeon 4750

It's pretty nice. Even without the gpu. The onboard graphics can handle all the new games at decent fps.

IMO, what you should get for a price/performance build is

Phenom II x3 720 BE
an AM3 mobo
4GB DDR3 ram
hd4870 (512mb for 1680x1050, 1GB for more)
600W PSU (PC power and cooling, Corsair, and Seasonic are all very good)

Intel's socket 775 stuff is good, but the new Phenom II's are slightly better and they are also less expensive. The reason I recommend AM3 is because it has an upgrade path.

I recently built my own also, but I really don't think you even have to go 4000s for the vid card...I'm currently running the 3870 card and it's been able to handle every game I've thrown its way - even running crysis at med-high settings very smoothly..I agree with DaveHao - just OC the hell out of some cheaper but adequate hardware..

I don't want to start another thread, but does anyone have advice on whether I should get the GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P or the ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 for my new i7 rig? I'm running 6GB Corsair Dominator, and maybe picking up a Geforce GTX 275..

Are you part of overclock.net? When I searched on that site, they had some very simliar questions/comparisons to yours.

Anyway, here's a short pro-Gigabyte thread between the two. But on the other hand, here's one that's had his second Gig board catch on fire...but everybody is saying it was just a fluke.

Here
's the search URL I was using (their own custom version has been down for awhile). Hope that helps!
