Clip+.  Rockbox it or not, but you'll be happy and not as poor as you'd think.

Touch screen or mechanical controls?
Size of screen preferred?
Codec support more than MP3s?
Video or Photo playback?
WiFi, Bluetooth, FM Radio, GPS?

Just a few of what comes with PMPs these days.

Could someone help me too? im eyeing the iMod by getting an iPod off ebay and diyModding it. But other any better deals for that price range?

Any type of controls.

iPod Classic ish size.

Must have FLAC and MP3 support.

Video and photos not needed

FM Radio would be nice, but not essential.

I have a 5.5 gen diymod by a fellow head-fier and paired it with a P-51 Mustang amp. I was looking for a top quality player and that's what I ended up with. If you want something more portable, go with a cowon (I've heard they're great). But if you like using itunes and don't mind lugging a portable rig around, you can consider the Imod.

Don't know which cowon is the best. But if you're looking for pure sq I'd also look into a hifiman hm-602 or hm-801. There are some good comparison threads on here.

Cowon X7 is the only HDD player.... However the J3 is the best Cowon player IMO. I own one and it is fantastic.
