As the title suggests. I wouldn't even know where to start. If someone could indicate how much I would have to spend to improve over sending the stream to an airport express and using the internal DAC inside that (and thereby having less wire around the place).
I live in Australia. If someone might suggest some cheap options, less than $200, and possibly available on flea bay?

Try the Fiio E17 - a solid DAC + headphone amp which is about the size of an iPod classic.

Addicted to audio in Vic sells it.

The new ODAC from Voldemort is coming soon, www.jdslabs.com/item.php?fetchitem=39 is selling them soon. (currently only has the PCB pre-order, but iirc they are going to sell it in a casing too). Should cost around 100$.
