Hi scrypt,

Quote:

Am I right in gleaning that a single unit takes an hour or two to mod? (Nevermind that it would take most of us several days, assuming (i) we had the faintest sense of what to do and (ii) our fingers weren't useless Parkinsonian stubs.)

I can *usually* get it done in a couple of hours, plus test time, pack n' ship, order processing, etc.

Keep in mind that I've been doing a lot of them. When I started, it certainly took more time. In fact, when I was researching the iMod, I went through a couple of units (damaged from mistakes...such as lifted pads) so I have lots of spare parts

Though the line out is rerouted to the headphone out (which is genius, since it avoids the clutter of docks and DINs), does that preclude other dock functions from being enabled?

After the iMod, only 2 things are disabled:

1) The headphone output capability because I use the 1/8" jack for the iModded line-out (which is 1Vrms)

2) The stock line out from the dock connector.

ALL other functionality remains the same.

I've found mine on ebay .
Plenty of 60gb 4g photo there , and some are brand new.

I just bought two used 60GB iPod Photos on eBay for $275 each. They are in good condition and I'll mod them at some point and sell them.

There are also a few online shops that sell new 60GB iPod Photos for under $350, and I've heard that you can get refurbed units from the Apple store at a good price.

Once thing is for sure....there are plenty of 4th Gen iPods out there! Who knows how many Apple manufactured?

Best regards,

Vinnie

My, do I have crisp news for you, A. Fixed:

If you place an immediate call to your local Apple Store, you might be able to do what I did: Pick up a refreshed 60gb iPod Photo for $199.

Keep in hind that the supply is nearly tapped, since the 4G has been discontinued for some time and a "refreshed" Apple product (which is not refurbished) must be returned, bug-free, to the physical store within fourteen days.

As I mentioned in two other threads (and as robster mentioned without mentioning my unmentionables -- what, am I dead to you, toots?), the sticker code for refreshed iPods is as follows: green = mint (no scratches or very few), yellow = good (some scratches) and red = fair (a patina of scratches but in perfect working order).

Here's the thing: refreshed iPods are never on display. You have to ask a salesperson at Apple to fetch one for you.

Don't loiter about, A.F. Storm that store immediate mot and pester an Apple helper.

=================================================

Vinnie: Thanks for the useful description. Two hours or longer is precisely what the customer wants to hear. All that care directed toward each unit (which each of us cares about already).

In-store price quote, please (if you have one)? Perhaps my search skills are challenged, but I found nothing on the Target site. I checked the Circuit City site as well, but the only 4G model I located was the HP 40gb for $399. That's $200 more than I paid for the 60gb. Store-specific sales on inventory must be far better than that, correct?

What seems even harder to find than a drastically discounted iPod Photo is a black 40/60GB Showroom case (model no. SHCASEPH02). Amazon appears to have it at first, but the item link is deceptive.

Thanks to all for the leads. I've been waiting for someone to come back to market with a unit with digital out and quality codecs. I can't listen to the iPods as is without getting frustrated with the sound quality but am tired of packing PCD and all the CD's to feed it. This sounds like the best compromise.

Vinnie, get your soldering iron heated up.

They call me Dornovia, that's Old Dug-Warmer in the corner, and this here's my crime-overhearing cohort, Mandingus Lad. Damnably thrilling to meet you in the textual flesh. Have you met my longtime companion, Tahitia Decalf?

It's surprising to me that even a b/w 4G 40gb iPod cannot be found online for anything approaching a bargain price. The fact is, a 4G 60gb photo still makes more sense financially, and then to send to Vinnie. Eventually I am going to buy another one of these so I have 2 with the iMod

I'll say this for the second time, in the clearest language possible:

Please give us price quotes, if you have them.

We'd like to know whether it's worth our while to go to these stores, even if said stores have 4G models in stock. You've been to them, apparently. Please tell us which models you found and how much they cost.

Recap of previous posts: Brick and mortar Apple Stores have the refreshed 60gb Photo for $199 (see specific instructions above for obtaining one). Small Dog had it for $359 before; now they offer the 30gb for $284. MacMall and the rest hawk the demo'd iPod Photo 60gb for $344 (as you and I have said), which in my view (and yours, it would seem) is no find. Vinnie has said he found said 60gb on eBay recently for $275, which seems the second-best price.

You've told us we can find discontinued 4G models at chain stores. Yes, I understand, and thanks for the tip sincerely. But unless Wal-Mart offers the iPod Photo, and for a price that is markedly better than online stores, I see no reason to visit. No offense, but, besides my anticipating a wasted trip, I'd rather not support a chain that discriminates against women, is viciously anti-union, grossly underpays its workers and uses illegal strategies to strip their benefits. Compared to the Waltons, Gates is looking saintlier by the day.

I recently got a refurbished 4g 60 gig iPod Photo on ebay for $200. The seller said it was used, but it wasn't. It was a blemished refurb. (tiny dot on the face) The serial number registered with Apple as new.

I got it when my 3g 30 gig went belly up. The only problem is that a friend of mine surprised me with a 5g 60 gig video, and my 3g 30 gig came back to life with a new cable and a reformat. Now I have 4 iPods! 2 60 videos, a 60 photo and a 30 3g.

I'm busy filling them all... the 60 photo is going to be entirely devoted to jazz. One of the videos will just have video on it, and the other will be classical. The 30gig will have country music, pop vocals, rock n roll, latin and radio shows. Hog heaven!

See ya
Steve
