I've read through some topics but I still don't understand why you would change firmware. Does it improve SQ? I read a topic that it can improve SQ on 5G iPods, but I'm getting a Sansa Fuze.

Edit:Woops. Meant to post this in Portable Sources

And gapless playback of basically all formats. Lovley when listening to especially live recordings.

To further his point, please refer to this thread which will explain why people would rather have FLAC.

You DO know that your linked thread is a gigantic troll, right?

It opens your player up to a range of upgrades, some small, some unnecessary, some worth it, some not.

The reason I changed is because it offered better features then stock iriver.

Also adds alot of customization options.

A couple of features alone may make it worth it.
* Support for a wide range of audio codecs, both lossy and lossless.
* Drag and drop to add files, for all supported DAPs.

Which generation iPods is it compatible with and can you still use the iPod to sync with iPod integrated devices, like my headunit in my car, which attaches via dock?

Yeah USB drag and drop is a big plus for most people.

Rockbox has improved the following on my H140 and added the following important features.. stock had drag 'n' drop and ogg support anyway.

Smaller fonts, replaygain, gapless, flac, no need for sync software, self build database. Able to delete files. But on another DAP it's made it a great piece of hardware (sync software no longer works) and now plays ogg, gapless and replaygain, drag/drop play by folder. What I'd do is buy a DAP with terrible stock firmware (that has Rockbox support) then try them both with dual boot. You will switch over to Rockbox.
