Hello,
I'm new to HiFi and just invested in the most expensive gear I've ever owned. I bought a Schiit Jotenheim amp with DAC module, which as far as I can tell is fantastic. I'm also using Tidal HiFi streaming for source. Very clean and powerful. I also bought a pair of AKG K712 Pros, and I don't like them at all. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me on what I ought to pursue next.
First, I will explain what I don't like about the AKGs:
- While the soundstage appears to be very large, I think it lacks what everybody is calling "imaging" (I think). It's like the sound is wide but I can't quite place "where" any of the instruments are located.
- They just sound "muddy". I don't know if there is a technical term for this but it's like I'm listening to them through through water or something. Bass is kind of weak and the voices and instruments just sound filtered---not pouring over me all pure, clarion, and present.
- The music doesn't sound properly engineered. It's like all the instruments are there but they sound cacophonous, like they're all just coming at me from all directions. No orchestration.
Second, I'll explain what I'm looking for:
- I want that pure, rich experience where the music just penetrates you. Listening to my Parrot Ziks (closed cans designed for noise cancellation and BT for Apple products) from my cheap Android phone is even able to do this for me to some degree. I want those rich vocals that just pour over me and powerful, but balanced bass that makes the music fun for everybody, not just 15 year olds.
- I will be using these for PC games as well, so something that doesn't totally crap the bed in that arena.
- Comfortable
Question:
1) If I had to make a decision today, I'd send back my AKGs and next try out Sinn HD650s, Hifiman HE-400i, or Fidelio Xs, or Fostex T50RPs. Would any of these get me where I want to be, or do I need to get electrostatics or something?
2) Is there another headphone in the $300ish price range that would give me what I'm looking for?
3) Would closed or semi-closed cans like the Fostex T50s be better (I ask this because my Parrots are closed, and I love the bass tones and how in ASMR videos it really feels like she's blowing on my ears)?
Thanks so much. I appreciate your help.
Nick
edit: Sorry, I should have mentioned what kinds of music I listen to. I have very eclectic tastes so an all-rounder may be ideal. I'll listen to dubstep or psytrance while coding, but sometimes sit and relax listening to Ludovico Einaudi, some classical guitar, or female vocal trip hop, lounge, and jazz. I may listen to some black metal, Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd.
