I tell them I collect vintage audio gear. That's why there are tubes sticking out of my amp and my cdp is so big and heavy but only play a single disc. This tactic works perfectly as most are quite amazed with the sound from my vintage gear (especially my tt) when they have a listen. I get comments like "they don't make 'em like they used to." I've had a couple of offers from aquaintances to take my vintage SCD-1 of my hand for $100.

Of course, my close friends (who knows how much I spend) still think I'm nuts.

I don't bother explaining as the first question they ask is how much it costs. They would never understand and that's fine by me, I don't expect them to either. I usually tell them it's one of those dated korean cheapo brands anyway. It saves a load of hassle.

What would you consider a good flashlight? I thought Maglites were very good, and I just bought a new Xenon bulb for mine. PM me if you want.

Maglites were ok 20 years ago, but no significant changes have been made to them in 15-20 years. The company also has some shoddy business practices, litigating some small but good flashlight companies out of existance, just because they could (they've got very deep pockets and a nice big team of lawyers). A company called Surefire makes some great lights and they are in widespread use with law enforcement and the military. I've got Surefire flashlights that are the size of an AA minimag that blow away a 4D Mag for light output and throw. Check out http://www.Surefire.com for some great, cutting-edge lights, and http://www.candlepowerforums.com/ for a message board where you can learn more than you ever wanted to know about flashlights. For those who know the difference, about the only thing a Maglite is good for is to host an LED mod and the bigger ones make nice clubs.

close enough to Dale Carnegie`s key rules, how to win friends and persuade people.

I simply tell people, sounds fantastic to me, reason I bought it. Never try and defend or get into details. Best way to win an argument is to avoid it, another DC rule.

The SACD/DVD-A debate is easily defeated with jack of all trades master of none. Own mostly CDs not high rez, maybe some day... Specialization via components better, vs combo units which sacrifice quality over quantity...

If the others are truly curious well then they will not argue but beg for enlightenment, which you can joyfully show them how to spend their money on indulgence, by referring them here. They will soon drift to Asylum, Audiogon and so on...

Enjoy, as I am confident you are

p.s. Not knocking hi-rez SACD or DVD-A they are on my desire list just not a high priority since no combo players that do both well are good values IMHO yet. Do not have room for 3 optical players. 2 Max.

Just tell them "It's a Head-fi thing, you wouldn't understand."

And the knocking a zero off the end doesn't work for me. Everyone still think's it's too expensive.

Of course if I knocked a zero off the end of my stuff, you vultures would overflow my PM box in a second.

I agree with Keith about the Surefire flashlight being far superior than the Maglites as I have several of them. I used to have a Surefire M3 Combatlight mounted on my Benelli 12 ga. Surefire's build quality and the lumens it emits from their various models far out performs any Maglites that are twice to three times it's size, and this is with the stock Xenon heads. Brightness or lumens can be further increased with their optional turbo heads for various models. The only setback that Surefire has against Maglite is it's cost which is a few dollars more, but then again you pay for what you get.

that actually looks like a cool hobby. flashlights, who knew? ah it would make sense the police would need good ones - for their rifles, hand held, etc.

That's the technique I use on my wife - I still end up in the doghouse somehow...
