how to explain your high-end audio gear to someone out of the loop?

I've stopped bothering. People can't see past the gear to what it's for, for the love of music. And if you don't get my need for music, then you fail to understand me.

HELL YES!!! - I heard that!

(Once they've got over the fact it stands me about £4000 and the only lights are from the green illuminated Naim Audio logo's on the front and you have to get up to change the volume! :P)

...because people give me this look, and then I get embarrased for opening my mouth. It's about as pointless as explaining my calculator collection, and how much I like Nixie tubes.

I've only had this happen with portable (people think I'm insane for building my own computer anyway, so I don't bother explaining about soundcards and the like) setups, but I just let 'em listen to it. They always seem amazed about my amp. "You mean that's an amp? In that tiny box?" Apparently amps have to weigh at least 50 pounds, be covered in heatsinks, and say "Rockford/Fosgate" on them.

Every time people hear it, they admit it sounds great, but once I tell them the total price (about $200 for HD 280 + CMoy + D-33), they say it's not worth it, and go back to their craptacular Sonys.

Even before they know I build my own, they wonder why are there so many. One of my building maintenence guys came to install a new carbonmonoxide/smoke detector and said I had a lot of computers. Thinking about his perspective, there were about 4 or 5 in view but they were not even operational but the cases. There were 2 barely out of sight. And I deliberately closed the door to my room which there are 5 more.

I'm not sure how one would explain tubes. Mine are bigger than lightbulbs. Thank goodness I didn't get an 845 based amp or it would be as bright as a dim light bulb.

How would one explain the massive amounts of wiring I have. The thick power cords....

I can't even explain it to myself

We've only got 4 or 5 working computers, and apparently that's a lot to most people. It's not like they're all top of the line or anything. (although I know someone who has a house filled with top-spec computers... insane) What's really fun is when you start discussing plans to build SFF computers in such things as mini-fridges. Geeks go "Cool!" and everyone else goes "Why?"

Oh, and meithkiller, I agree about the flashlight bit. I'm looking into getting a decent LED light (Inova or Arc, methinks, but the latter is no longer being made and rather expensive on eBay), and people give me really funny looks when I mention even a $60 flashlight.

Those presumably would be the ones made using super-advanced materials, like "some clear tape" and "some not so clear tape."

My Inova X5 cost me about £50 over here in the UK (Yes - we get royally screwed by the tax man

Some guys thought my iMP-450 was awesome. When they heard I bought it for 100 bucks... they said it was P.O.S....

one of my friends has an ipod. he always listens to his apple buds even though he can afford any set up you can think of. i had my FC7 in school so told him to listen to them, after about 10 seconds he said that they sound crappy and Bose ones that he doesnt even own sound much better coz they are $300 and mine are $60. i think i almost convinsed him to get nice pair of speaker and cans.
