I'm using APL Virtuoso with my own SOFA file but I've noticed that Virtuoso doesn't apply diffuse field eq to the HRIR, thus making it harsh. How do I bake in a diffuse field eq to my HRIR?
Hello, it's Hyunkook from APL here. Diffuse field equalisation is usually applied to HRIRs themselves in most SOFA databases. The preset HRTFs used in VIRTUOSO are diffuse field equalised ones. But if you import your own SOFA file and if it is not diffuse field equalised one, then yes it'd sound harsh. Not sure how your HRIRs were measured, but if it was from a service, you should request diffuse field equalised version to the service provider. If you measured them for yourselves, you can create a diffuse field EQ filter by measuring HRIRs for as many positions as possible in your space and averaging the responses, then convolving the raw ones with the inverse filter created using the average response. Or you could try using the diffuse field inverse filter from the old SADIE database https://www.york.ac.uk/sadie-project/database_old.html (if you look download one of the wav versions there is a diff_filt.wav in the DFC folder). But you could try the KEMAR or some individual subject ones.
